Il retient pourtant notre attention à plus d'un titre. Des explorateurs de la grande expédition allemande de 1860, v. Beurmann est en effet celui qui a approché au plus près le but de cette mission: atteindre le Ouadaï et recueillir des informations sur Vogel, explorateur dont on était sans nouvelles depuis plusieurs années [.] Ce qui fait l'intérêt majeur de cette aventure, c'est la situation des régions traversées. Sa première expérience africaine, v. Beurmann la fit en Nubie et au Soudan. On peut regretter que son journal de route ne livre que peu de renseignements, hors les indications d'itinéraires [.] A vrai dire, v. Beurmann considérait ce voyage comme un premier sondage qui servirait à des études ultérieures, plus approfondies [.] Par contre, il effctue de véritables explorations au cours de son deuxième séjour africain. Au Fezzan, [.] il reconnait la région de Ouaou (Wau)[.] Plus tard, il passe par Madam, Kamada, Blaka et Djado : il séjourne dans ce dernier groupe d'oasis, ce qu'aucun européen n'avait jamais fait [.] Malheureusement, de tous ces voyages nous n'avons que des bribes [.] Les éléments essentiels de son uvre se trouvent dispersés [.] Notre intention a été de rassembler toutes ces sources de documentation éparses et de les présenter à ceux qui s'intéressent au passé de l'Afrique en un ensemble cohérent.
