About the Book :-The author reveals that the study of Sanskrit has but recently risen in the estimation of the educated natives of this Presideney and of their Educational authorities. The old Sanskrit College of Poona owed its existence and continuance rather to a spirit o…f conciliation and toleration in their rulers, than to their conviction of the utility of Sanskrit as a branch of general education. The modern critical and progressive spirit was not brought to bear upon it. The old Sastris were allowed to carry all things in their own way. After about thirty years since its establishment, the authorities began to exercise active interference, until at length the College was abolished, and a new system inaugurated, which to be complete and effective requires, in his humble opinion, a partial restoration of the old institution. One of his aims giving to this book its peculiar form was to enable the intelligent student to go through it without assistance. To increase its efficacy in this respect, such explanations seems to be called for have been added in the shape of footnotes, and few other improvements and modifications have been made. The writer is happy to learn that this object is remarkably fulfilled. About the Author:-Sir Ramakrishna Gopal Bhandarkar (Marathi: 6th July 1837 24th August 1925) was an Indian scholar, orientalist, and social reformer. He was born in Malvan in Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra in a Goud Saraswat Brahmin family. After early schooling in Ratnagiri, he studied at Elphinstone College in Bombay. Along with Mahadev Govind Ranade, Bhandarkar was among the first graduates in 1862 from Bombay University. He obtained his Master's degree the following year, and was awarded a PhD from University of Göttingen in 1885.Bhandarkar taught at Elphinstone College,(Mumbai) and Deccan College (Pune) during his distinguished teaching career. He was involved in research and writing throughout his life. He retired in 1894 as the Vice Chancellor of Bombay University. He participated in international conferences on Oriental Studies held in London (1874) and Vienna (1886), making invaluable contributions. In 1853, while a student, Bhandarkar became a member of the Paramhansa Sabha, an association for furthering liberal ideas which was then secret to avoid the wrath of the powerful and orthodox elements of contemporary society. Visits from Keshub Chandra Sen during 1864 had inspired the members of the Sabha.
