Un cas en que conflrrna prou clarament el que acabem de dir es el de 1'estudi del pro-jecte de Gaudi per a 1'esglesia de Santa Co-loma de Cervello. Aquest edifici, incomplet, bastit solament fins a la coberta de la cripta, constitueix un dels monuments mes insignes de la historia de 1'arquitectura. Qualsevol arquitecte que s'hi atansi amb 1'esperit obert i la sensibilitat a flor de pell, ha de sentir com una rafocada del vent de la inspiracio, com una guspira de genialitat que brolla d'aque-lla petita construccio nascuda tan sols com una humil capella d'una colonia fabril. Pero 1'arquitecte no pot quedar-se tan solament amb aquesta primera impressio acla-paradora i impressionant. Immediatament sent la necessitat d'aprofundir en 1'estudi de les formes, de restructure i de la idea que mogue 1'autor d'un projecte tan singular. Se n'ha parlat molt, i molt s'ha escrit al respecte, pero mancava un estudi fet amb paciencia constant, sense gens de pressa, amb intel-ligencia i visio constructiva, i, per damunt de tot, amb un gran amor per 1'obra i la figura d'Antoni Gaudi. Un comes aixi nomes el podia acomplir Isidre Puig i Boa-da; el llibre present es precisament el fruit de totes aquestes coincidencies. Puig i Boada conegue Gaudi, escolta dels seus llavis les lluminoses explicacions sobre 1'art, la vida i 1'arquitectura tan caracteris-tiques de la forca espiritual, immensa i convincent d'aquell arquitecte d'ulls blaus i profunds. Anys i anys de treball com a cap de 1'equip tecnic del temple de la Sagrada Familia, Than familiaritzat amb els secrets mecanics, poetics i intui'tius de 1'arquitectura gaudi-niana. Pero Puig i Boada, a mes, serva intacte el record de la seva primera visita a 1'esglesia en construccio a la Colonia Giiell i les explicacions de Gaudi al grup d'estudiants de I'Escola d'Arquitectura, dirigits pel catedra-tic Jaume Bayo i Font. La comparacio, feta anys despres, entre la tecnica de la Sagrada Familia i la de 1'esglesia de la Colonia Giiell, 1'inclina a estu-diar amb gran deteniment les solucions constructives de la Colonia que tan diver-ses eren de les del Temple. Dissortadament, els fets lamentables de ju-liol del 1936 van malmetre seriosament la documentacio gaudiniana i molt especial-ment la maqueta i els planols de la Colonia Giiell, i per a intentar una possible restitu-cio del projecte de 1'esglesia superior no quedava altre remei que estudiar, amb paciencia benedictina, les fotografies de la maqueta polifunicular o estereostatica i els pocs dibuixos de Gaudi encara conservats VII 87 pages.
