Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. AK3 - A paperback book SIGNED by Lynn A. Bonfield and Mary C. Morrison in very good condition that has some bumped corners, wrinkling, chipping and crease, lightly curled, fading on the spine, stains on the page edges, light discoloration and shelf wear. 9.25"x6.25", 267 pages. Satisfaction Guaranteed. This book tells the story of Roxana Brown Walbridge Watts (1802-1862), a farm wife in Peacham, Vermont, and the twelve children she raised - nine of her own, two stepchildren, and a grandchild; six girls and six boys. Mined from a rich lode of primary material - letters, diaries, photographs - these personal histories describe a strikingly broad range of experiences. Six of Roxanna's children moved west, three settling permanently in the Midwest and three others going to California during the Gold Rush. Six made their lives in Vermont, venturing away only temporarily. Two of the men fought in the Civil War. One of the women left home to work in the Lowell textile mills, while another attended Mount Holyoke Seminary. The children's occupations were no less waived: farmer, farm wife, pastor, wheelwright, miner, scholar, lawyer, schoolteacher, artist, and matron at a school for the deaf. In their letters Roxana and her children discuss their daily concerns - farm work and crops, medical emergencies and treatments, the details of marriages, births, and deaths. They write about matters of national significance as well: the westward migration, the contrast between women's and men's experiences, the temperance and abolition movements, the mechanization of farm life, and the increase of secularization. Together their stories offer an intimate portrait of an American family caught up in the sweep of a century of change. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Signed by Both Authors.

First edition. 8vo. Maroon cloth, titles stamped in gold gilt on the front cover and spine,400 pp., frontispiece, preface, acknowledgments, editor's note, illustrated, footnotes, appendices, bibliography, index. "Alfred S. Rix and Chastina Walbridge Rix started a shared journal in Peacham, Vermont, on their wedding day in July 1849. For almost five years they alternated entries, writing about everything from their roles within the marriage, to the birth and raising of their first child, to their differences when it came to deciding whether they should go to California along with many other Americans who were being drawn west by 'gold fever." - the Preface. They're trips to California, trying to be successful in the search for gold, and settling down in California rather than returning to Vermont are highlights of the book. As new, unread copy without dust jacket, as issued.

Hardcover. Condizione: New. First Edition. 400 pages, frontis, illustrations. "Unique husband-and-wife account, which captures the turbulence of life and events during the gold rush era, is also a personal and compelling chronicle of a singular family's separation and reunion. Stricken with "gold fever," Alfred headed to California, while Chastina stayed behind. Alone with their young son in Vermont, Chastina continued the journal, describing her loneliness and fatigue as she labored to maintain the household, and summarizing Alfred's frequent letters. After establishing himself economically in San Francisco, Alfred urged his wife to join him. Chastina and their two-year-old son traveled by ship, via Panama, to California, where the couple resumed their journal, continuing the pattern of alternating entries and detailing life in the burgeoning city. Alfred's concluding notes at the end of the journal are an abrupt reminder that, just as now, life in the middle of the nineteenth century could bring unexpected and personal tragedy.".
