One of the best references to what a trade binding house looked like in the middle of the 19th century. Enhanced by 17 illustrations by Hinckley showing various scenes in the bindery. The fifth Christmas book issued by Oak Knoll. stiff paper wrappers printed in two colors.

From the preface by Julie Miller: We often speak of how a particular phenomenon has "reached a tipping point" - when knowledge and practice have developed in plain sight and then suddenly explodes on scene as a revolution in our thinking. Gary Frosts career with bookbinding, through his research, practice, and teaching, has been a series of such revolutions, and he has periodically named and defined how to evaluate and express the successive developments of the codex. The lynchpin in his work is ever the model - the why and how, generic, facsimile, or interpretive, material considerations and material compromises - all in the pursuit of an answer to these questions: What does the model tell us about book action in a given structure? What are the possibilities for adaptation? A Crafted Typology of the Codex is the summation of Frosts thinking, writing, and teaching on book action expressed though modelmaking . and it presents an exploration of codex chronology in both words and illustrations, and carries the ongoing discussion of the physical book into the electronic realm.

From a catalogue note in The Guild of Book Worker Journal: "This pamphlet is a summary of the research done on bookbinding leathers by the British Leather Manufacturer's Association and the Printing Industry Research Association under the direction of R. Faraday Innes. Detailed reports were published while the research was in progress by the Bookbinding Leather Committee. It discusses the causes of leather decay, the PIRA test, and the limited usefulness of leather dressings. It recommends the use of potassium lactate as a preservative and gives the formula for its manufacture A valuable book for any one interested in the care and preservation of leather bindings."
