Johansen] This is the story of the Corps of Volunteers for Northwest Discovery, commonly known as the Lewis and Clark expedition. Captain Meriwether Lewis and Lieutenant William Clark, co-leaders of this expedition, have a well-deserved place in American history for leading their party safely across unknown parts of the continent. It is a less well-known fact that the Corps was a pioneer American military organization charged with missions of discovery and peacemaking among the Indians. It is no less significant that the Corps was a volunteer military organization. The regular army men and raw recruits who composed the Corps when it left the Mandan villages in the spring of 1805 had freely chosen to participate in this adventure. They as freely chose to accept the discipline essential to its success. In the introductory chapter and in those which carry the narralive along. Miss Bordwell has brought out the character of the organization and of the men who functioned in it. Interwoven with her chapters are generous selections from the journals of the two leaders, giving the reader first-hand accounts of the hazards they faced and the problems that perplexed them. These selections, edited for the modem reader, are drawn from the basic source for any account of the expedition, Reuben Gold Thwaites? Original Journals of The Lewis and Clark Expedition, 1804-1806 . (8 volumes, Dodd, New York, 1904-1905). This second Beaver Book pairs off naturally with the first, TheVoyage of the Columbia; Around the World with John Boit, (1790-1793). Both are accounts of discovery and adventure which follow closely, if not literally, the reports of participants in the events they describe. It is hoped these two volumes will illustrate the richness and value of original records in understanding the history of our country.

"Frances Fuller Victor: for more than half a century this force of nature roamed the western frontiers of nineteenth-century America. Chronicler, historian-poet, journalist and oral historian; she was a puzzle then and she is now, demanding much reflection. . Victor's style was trenchant, quick and penetrating, possessed of more wit and sarcasm than irony, unlike her close associates Mark Twain, Bret Harte, J. Ross Brown, Judge Matthew Deady and even J. Quinn Thornton, to name a few of her San Francisco and Oregon Country cronies. . We are all recipients of her special endowments as an observer on our several western frontiers.".
