La versione è curata dall' illustre germanista palermitano Giuseppe Antonio Borghese, gli splendidi capolettera e le 3 tavole in litografia sono illustrate da Leonardo M. Borghese. Adelbert Von Chamisso scrisse questo romanzo fantastico raccontando le vicende umane di Peter Schlemihl, un poveraccio che accetta un patto con uno strano diavolo. Il baratto è la propria ombra in cambio di una borsa ricolma di monete d'oro. La perdita dell'ombra lo esilierà dal consesso degli uomini e lo costringerà a viaggiare, servendosi dei magici stivali delle sette leghe. Il romanzo che affonda nel mito del Faust, venne pubblicato nel 1813, prima del Faust di Goethe.
