Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. From humble origins, the eminent Russian scientist Nicholas Borodin forged a career in microbiology in the era of Stalin. Pragmatic and dedicated to his work, he accepted the Soviet regime, even working on several occasions with the Secret Police. But in 1948, while on a state-sponsored trip to the UK to report on the bulk manufacture of antibiotics, he could no longer ignore his rising consciousness of the suppression of independent thought in his country. It was then that he committed high treason by writing to the Soviet ambassador to renounce his citizenship. One Man in his Time is the story of a man trying to live an ordinary life in extraordinary times. Rich in incident and astonishing details, it charts Borodin's childhood during the revolution and famine through to his scientific career amidst the suspicion and violence of the purges. Unsparing and frank in its depiction of the author's collaboration with Soviet authorities, it offers unparalleled insight into the daily reality of life under totalitarian rule. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

The first (no.8 in the opera) is the 'Dance of Polovtsian Maidens' while the remaining dances are taken from the second act finale (no.17). Borodin worked sporadically for almost 18 years on Prince Igor but it was left in an incomplete chaotic state upon his death in 1887. The dances here were selected and partially orchestrated by Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov for an 1879 concert performance and subsequently revised by him after the opera's publication in 1888. This newly engraved edition by Clinton F. Nieweg and Nancy M. Bradburd has been meticulously researched from authoritative sources so that Borodin's masterful dances are available for the enjoyment of professionals and amateurs alike. This edition differs from the one by Richard W. Sargeant in that it is drawn directly from the opera and includes the parts for chorus, while Sargeant's is for orchestra alone. The large conductor's score and orchestral parts are also now available from Serenissima Music - the only authorized publisher of Nieweg's editions. *Chorus / Orchestra (2+1, 2d1, 2, 2 - 4, 2, 3, 1, tmp, 3prc, hrp, strs) *ISMN: 979-0-58042-710-6.
