A touch of marking / foxing spots to the pages, but still in bright, attractive condition. Set in the colonial Dutch Indies. With polychrome and monochrome illustrations by J. Scheidel on every page. Jocko by J. C. Bouwmeester is set in the colonial Dutch Indies. It tells the story of a rich plantation owner and his orang-utan companion Jocko. When the boat, on which the plantation owner's child is travelling, is shipwrecked Jocko rescues the child and brings it back home. The story and its illustrations can be seen as offending to the native inhabitants of the Indies, because they show slaves dancing in the same way as Jocko the orang-utan. Hereby this book is not just a story to read but also an important note in cultural and colonial history. B2333.
