The Braggs revolutionized the science of crystallography. One of the most fruitful sequels of this work was Moseley's reconstruction of the Periodic Table. The discovery of the chemical basis of life--DNA--by Perutz and others is yet another of the important sequels to the Bragg experiments. The Braggs were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1915. (Printing and the Mind of Man No. 406.) Ink inscription: "E. V. Appleton St. John's College Cambridge." This is the signature of Edward Victor Appleton, who did postgraduate work in crystallography under William Henry Bragg at St. John's College in Cambridge. Appleton himself won a Nobel Prize in Physics in 1947 for his investigation of the physics of the upper atmosphere. Stamped on both covers and the spine are gilt emblems (Appletons?). Certainly one of the most desirable copies of this notable book. Signed by Nobel prizewinner.
