Je moet niet eerder dan die maandag aan dat stukje gaan denken. De tekst loopt van de duim die verzint naar de wijsvinger die tikt, zonder hart…of hersens te passeren. De enige verieiste is lef. Ik kom wel eens iemand tegen die zegt: 'je kolom van deze week - dat kan ik ook.' Dan antwoord ik: 'maar zou je het ook hebben kunnen willen durven laten drukken?' De kracht van de kolumnist is als de kracht van het weer: de lezer kan erop rekenen dat hij er zal zijn, maar wordt toch steeds verrast.Eens per jaar leest de kolumnist wat hij heeft geschreven, met stijgende blos. Hij knipt de beste stukjes uit en maakt er een boekje van. Terwijl zijn slechtgeschreven, krantepapieren, ongecorrigeerde kolom elke week door meer dan honderdduizend lezers wordt verslonden, kopen hoogstens vijfduizend mesen dat boekje, omdat ze de omslag mooi vinden, of omdat jarige nicht zo van Grijs houdt. Ik heb een paar jaar niet aan die gewoonte meegedaan. Maar nu ben ik gezwicht voor uw smeekbeden. Het blinde lot heeft uit het gros artikelen van drie jaar een kwart aangewezen: een dozijn ideeën, een dozijn verhalen en een dozijn afwijkingen. U krijgt dus een goede indruk van mijn gemiddeld peil. Staat het u aan, lees mij dan elke week in Vrij Nederland.
