'Personal Beauty' rings a bell as a Victorian title, but let me search to confirm the details before describing it.Daniel Garrison Brinton (1837-1899) was an American physician, ethnologist, and medical editor who served as a surgeon in the U.S. Army and later edited the Medical and Surgical Reporter and the Weekly Compendium of Medical Science. He was a member of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. George Henry Napheys (1842-1876) was a physician and medical writer who served as Chief of the Medical Clinic of Jefferson Medical College and belonged to the Philadelphia County Medical Society. Together they brought strong medical authority to a subject then occupying the boundary between orthodox medicine and popular self-help literature. Personal Beauty: How to Cultivate and Preserve It in Accordance with the Laws of Health was first published by W.J. Holland of Springfield, Massachusetts in 1870, with what appears to have been a slightly earlier 1869 printing also recorded. The Library of Congress holds the original and has digitized it. It runs to 346 pages and measures 19 centimetres. The book is now in the public domain and has been reproduced in numerous facsimile and print-on-demand editions. The book's central premise is stated in its subtitle: beauty and health are not merely compatible but inseparable.
