Hardcover. Condizione: Very good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very good. [8], 310, [2] pages. Illustrations. Inscribed by the author on the half-title page. Donna Marie Britt is an American author and former syndicated newspaper columnist, reporter and critic. Her first book was Brothers (& me): A Memoir of Loving and Giving. Britt launched her journalism career at the Detroit Free Press in 1980 where she worked as a general assignment reporter, features writer and fashion columnist. A former editor and film critic for USA Today, she joined the Washington Post in 1989, earning acclaim as an op-ed columnist and writing frequently about social, cultural and racial issues. Her weekly column ran in newspapers in more than 60 cities, and was syndicated by the Washington Post Writer's Group. Britt's 2011 book, Brothers (& me): a Memoir of Loving and Giving was honored by O: The Oprah Magazine as one of January 2012's "Ten Titles to Pick Up Now," and excerpted that same month by Essence magazine. Derived from a Kirkus review: Former Washington Post columnist Britt offers an introspective account of growing up in Gary, Indiana, a small town most famous for having the title "murder capital of the United States." Her brother Darrell's death was unique in that it came at the hands of a pair of Gary police officers who claimed they'd been attacked. Beginning her career as a journalist, the author remained attentive to issues of race, though she struggled with her personal relationships with black men. While Britt initially positions herself as the perpetual victim, by the end of the book she begins to understand her complicity in her choices, coming to terms with the death of her brother. The author is at her best when grappling with these complex relationships shared between African-American men and women: Yet Britt makes clear that it is also a dance of owning up to hard truths and facing the worst of life head-on. A probing psychological exploration that delves to rarely tapped depths. First Edition [Stated], First Printing [Stated].

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. Donna Britt has always been surrounded by men-her father, three brothers, two husbands, three sons, countless friends. She learned to give to them at an early age. But after her beloved brother Darrell's senseless killing by police 30 years ago, she began giving more, unconsciously seeking to help other men the way she couldn't help Darrell. Brothers (and Me) navigates Britt's life through her relationships with men-resulting in a tender, funny and heartbreaking exploration of universal issues of gender and race. It asks: Why, for so long, did Britt-like millions of seemingly self-aware women-rarely put herself first? With attuned storytelling and hard-wrought introspection, Britt finds that even the sharpest woman may need reminding that giving to others requires giving to oneself.
