Besides all this, he founded the world's first popular museum of natural science and art. Peale's life exemplifies the American experience in the eighteenth century. His paintings~ more than a thousand canvases~ present a superb record of colonial and federal society. Beautifully reproduced here are paintings of Maryland's planter families and Philadelphia's mercantile elite, prosperous New Yorkers and aristocratic Virginians, Revolutionary War leaders and America's first statesmen, scientists and explorers. In mid~life Peale turned to the study of nature and assembled a museum in Philadelphia that was, in its time, the most important institution of its kind in the country. Described and illustrated here is his greatest personal triumph and most significant contribution to science~the discovery, excavation, and mounting of the first complete skeleton of a mastodon ever found. Essays by three distinguished scholars and more than 180 illustrations of Peale's paintings and actual objects from his museum provide an absorbing overview and appraisal of the life and achievements of this remarkable, complex and altogether engaging artist~naturalist. A selected bibliography and a catalogue that includes provenance and references, size, date, medium, location, and accession numbers for Peale's paintings, museum specimens, and artifacts make the book an indispensable reference for anyone interested in American art and history.

In 1775, inspired by the American Revolution, Peale moved from his native Maryland to Philadelphia, where he set up a painting studio and joined the Sons of Liberty. During the American Revolutionary War, Peale served in the Pennsylvania Militia and the Continental Army, participating in several military campaigns. In addition to his military service, Peale also served in the Pennsylvania State Assembly from 1779 to 1780. Peale's portraits of leading American figures of the late 18th century are some of the most recognizable and prominent from that era. In 1784, he founded the Philadelphia Museum, one of the first American museums. More than two centuries after Peale painted his 1779 portrait Washington at Princeton, the painting sold for $21.5 million, the highest price ever paid for an American portrait ; Quelle Wikipedia - Original Cloth binding in very good condition, inside and outside, with owner notice.
