First printed in 1969 this reprint of 1975 indicates that the book filled a need in the literature applied to the development of art NZ from the late1830s, when the first colonial artists were putting brush to canvas. As well as studying the evolution of NZ art from these pioneer artists, who had to adapt European techniques to deal with the differences in conditions and locations, the survey moves through to contemporary times and painters who, post-WWII, became more innovative, independent and were accorded recognition in their own time. Both authors were influential in the NZ art world and well qualified to produce this authoratative assessment, in text and pictures, of the way art evolved in the country. First reprint, published by Collins in 1975, 223 pages including sources and index, colour and b/w art reproductions by numerous artists throughout, Black hard covers with white spine titles and front decoration are VG+, internally NF, no inscriptions.
