Romare Bearden (1911-1988) is internationally recognized as the dean of Black American artists. His visual idiom involves montage and collage elements in combination with forms and styles that echo those of African sculpture, and is orchestrated by a deft manipulation of mass and volume. Includes a chronology, list of exhibitions, selected bibliography, and numerous large illustrations of Bearden's drawings, paintings, and collages from 1940 to the present. VG/G. A Very Good Minus copy in a Very Good DJ. 7 lbs. 1 oz. Romare Bearden [1911-1988] was an American artist, author, and songwriter of extraordinary accomplishment. He worked with many types of media including cartoons, oils, and collages. Bearden's early work focused on unity and cooperation within the African-American community. After a period during the 1950s when he painted more abstractly, the theme reemerged in his collage works of the 1960s. The New York Times described Bearden as "the nation's foremost collagist" in his obituary. Bearden became a founding member of the Harlem-based art group known as Spiral, formed to discuss the responsibility of the African-American artist in the civil rights movement. Bearden was the author or coauthor of several books. He also was a songwriter, known as co-writer of the jazz classic "Sea Breeze", which was recorded by Billy Eckstine, a former high school classmate at Peabody High School, and Dizzy Gillespie. He had long supported young, emerging artists and he and his wife established the Bearden Foundation to continue this work, as well as to support young scholars. In 1987, Bearden was awarded the National Medal of Arts.

But his art reaches out far beyond the confines of its basic sources in the so-called Black experience, beyond the sociological implications that lie within his imagery. His visual idiom involves montage and collage elements in combination with forms and styles that echo those of African sculpture, and is orchestrated by a deft manipulation of mass and volume. Haunting, lovely, sometimes disturbing but always profoundly felt, his images communicate their power directly to the viewer. Their message is all the more immediate because of the artists great skill in fusing emotive imagery with unerring sophistication of technique. Beardens almost primitive paintings of the 1940s are stylized statements about Negro life, employing a simplicity of form and color that enhances their expressive power. This emotional force persists in his abstract works of the 1950s, reaching a peak in the highly charged, complex collages of the 1960s-compelling, immediate celebrations not only of Black anguish and survival but of the indomitable human spirit." --Publisher. Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: new. Cowan, Pamela (illustratore). Paperback. What if Geoffrey Chaucer walked into a modern day 24 hour diner? What sort of characters would he meet? What sort of stories would they tell? In Diner Tales, Bunch reboots Chaucer's master work, capturing the "motley ensemble" of insomniacs who gather late at night in a diner to entertain each other with stories. Chaucer wrote for the masses and by moving his retreatment to the new world and the new era Bunch reclaimed the simple, often bawdy fun of the original from the shelf of stuffy academia. Don't let this easy-to-read set of tales deceive you. Bunch has studied history and literature in England, and regularly edits the Canterbury Tales page for Shelfari. By combining authentic flair with updated charm Diner Tales delivers the spectacle of story one entertaining installment at a time. This item is printed on demand.
