From the blurb In Canada is ever again involved in war she will fa…ce the question of how nearly a total allocation of her manpower to war purposes can, or should, be approached. The problem in total war is to allocate the nation s manpower, which now includes women, between the armed forces, industries engaged in the manufacture of munitions and equipment, the transportation services, and the public services necessary to maintain the national life. Canada faced a desperate shortage of reinforcements in 1944. It is Major-Generals Burn s purpose to enquire into the use made by the Canadian Army of the manpower at its disposal in the Second World War. It is nor General Burns purpose to excite controversy, but to present the facts. Canada s library of military literature is not great. This book is a notable addition to it. General Burns is greatly qualified to write a study of manpower in the Canadian Army, since he has spent most of his adult life in the services, as a volunteer in the first World War and a member of the service between the wars. In World War II he commanded with distinction the Second Division in England and the 1st Canadian Corps in Italy. At the end of the War, he became Deputy Minister for Veterans Affairs with the Government of Canada. At the time of this book s publication he was Chief-of-Staff of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization in Palestine. This book, 184 pages, is in near-fine condition in a fair dust jacket, that is now in a protective mylar wrap. The book is full of tables, charts and data and analysis. A scarce but important book of Canadian military history.
