A very nice copy of this cautionary tale. Written back in 2004, when we thought that George W. Bush was about as bad as it could get, this book shows the presidency that paved the way for the Trump oligarchy.

Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. THE SENATE OF THE ROMAN REPUBLIC SENATOR ROBERT C. BYRD ADDRESSES 1995. I am very pleased to be able to offer for your consideration a gorgeous book about an astonishing feat by one of our Senator/Leaders, from not so long ago, when leadership is what we expected and what we got from Congress, instead of just partisanship. Please find: "The Senate of the Roman RepublicAddresses on the History of Roman Constitutionalism," by Robert C. Byrd, United States Senator. As the Foreword of this book notes: "On May 5, 1993, Senator Robert C. Byrd, chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, initiated a series of fourteen addresses in opposition to the proposed line-item-veto concept. During the following five and a half months, he delivered each of these speechespacked with names, dates and complex narrativesentirely from memory and without recourse even to notes or consultation with staff aides." This Foreword was written by Richard Allan Baker, then Historian of the United States Senate whose signed business card is laid-in in this copy. This medium-sized hard cover book (6 ¼ x 9 ¼ inches, 189 pages) was published by the US Government Printing Office, Washington, as Senate Document 103-23, dated 1995. It is bound in burgundy cloth boards with gilt decorations and titles on cover and spine. This is a book which honors us all as Americans whose leaders once knew how to lead (please excuse the editorializing but these are trying times for any thinking man or woman). Condition: This book is in very good condition. The hard covers are clean and bright and the gilt decorations very beautiful. There is a tiny bit of rubbing to the gilt Roman emblem on the front cover (please see the photos). Inside, a former owner has left his inked name on the front endpaper. Otherwise, the interior of the book is bright white and clean from cover to cover. Both hinges are fully intact, and the binding is tight, sound and square. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.
