Gray cloth soiled; rubbing and flaking to front board and spine's decorative color stamping; light wear at spine ends, slight bumping to bottom board corners. Gilt top edge; deckle fore-edge and deckle bottom edge. Endpapers toned; front pastedown adorned with personal bookplate of A.V.L. Brokaw, M.D.; a few foxing spots on initial leaves with small light shallow stains at upper fore-edge margins of some early text leaves; interior pages overall remain quite clean. Binding is firm. A very good- copy. With twelve full-page b/w photogravures on unpaged leaves each retaining their tissue guard sheets plus eight other smaller photogravures interspersed amongst text; several other tissue guard sheets laid-in; printer's colophon at book's rear. THE GRANDISSIMES was first published in book form in 1880 after being serialized in Scribner's magazine. A.V.L. Brokaw was apparently a St. Louis, Missouri abdominal surgeon circa 1880s-1920s although the book turned up in a Demopolis, Alabama estate.
