He was founder and Director of the Laboratory of Chemical Biodynamics and simultaneously Associate Director of Berkeley Radiation Laboratory, where he conducted much of his research until retiring in 1980. Lieutenant General Oleg Georgievich Gazenko (December 12, 1918 - November 17, 2007) was a scientist, general in the Soviet Air Force and the former director of the Institute of Biomedical Problems in Moscow. He was a leading scientist behind the Soviet animals in space programs, he selected and trained Laika, the dog who flew on the Sputnik 2 mission.
