Spine is adorned with two leather labels, red and black, stamped in gilt lettering reading "Senate Document, 2d Session, 32nd Congress. 1852-53". This Executive Document No. 59 is accompanied by numerous maps, sketches, views and illustrations, two of which are fold-out. Report includes sub-reports by various authors including 1)"Report of the Natural History of the Country Passed Over by the Exploring Expedition Under the Command of Brevet Captain L. Sitgreaves, U. S. Topographical Engineers, During the Year 1851" by S. W. Woodhouse, M.D., surgeon and naturalist to the expedition; 2)"Zoology", specifically: "Mammals and Birds" by S. W. Woodhouse, M.D.; "Reptiles", by Edward Hallowell, M.D.; "Fishes", by Prof. S. F. Baird and Charles Girard; and 3)"Botany", by Professor John Torrey. Includes a list of illustrations of landscapes, mammals, birds, reptiles, fishes, plants, and maps; as well as a table of contents at the end of the report and index of scientific names. At the front, this volume includes a 31-page "Index to Executive Documents Printed by Order of The Senate of the United States, Second Session, Thirty-Second Congress, 1852-'53 in Eleven Volumes". Of those eleven volumes, this copy is listed as being Volume 10, Executive Document No. 59 within that index. 1-31, [3], 4-198, 78 plates (all present), and large fold out map. Includes Plate XXI which is not included on the list of illustrations. CONDITION: Overall moderate wear. Front joint is cracked, yet hinges are still strong and boards are well affixed. Binding is sound. Significantly foxed within the text, yet plates are much less affected and are magnificent. Ex-library with library stamps from "The Reynolds Library, Manchester" within the introductory pages and pastedowns. No ex-library mark on the spine. All plates are present. A very nice, fascinating copy. Full refund if not satisfied.

    Hardcover. Condizione: Very good. First edition. Senate Issue. 8vo. Original brown ribbed cloth blocked in blind on the boards and spine and with the title in copper on the spine. Spine sunned and title dulled, with wear to the edges and corners, else this is a very good copy with the textblock in near fine condition and seldom seen so. All plates present as issued. Note, however, that the Bird plate No. 2 was not issued; the Reptile plate 12 is misnumbered XIII. And, as Graff notes, the Landscape plates numbered 14-20 are misnumbered 15-21; all issued plates are here present. The large folding map is present. It is in good condition, with only a few separations at the folds, and a closed tear where it is detached. It is laid in at the rear. The Sitgreaves Expedition Down the Zuni and Colorado Rivers in 1851 was a combined American scientific and military mission to explore the Zuni River, the Little Colorado River and the Colorado River in 1851. Setting out from northern New Mexico, the expedition traveled west across Arizona and then south along the Colorado to Fort Yuma in California. Graff p. 572. Howes S-521. .

Senate Executive Doc No. 59, 32d Congress, 2d Session, 1853. Includes an index to the 11 Volumes of Senate Executive Documents bound into the front of this volume. The Sitgreaves Expedition Down the Zuni and Colorado Rivers in 1851 was a combined American scientific and military mission to explore the Zuni River, the Little Colorado River and the Colorado River in 1851. Setting out from northern New Mexico, the expedition traveled west across Arizona and then south along the Colorado to Fort Yuma in California. "This is the first detailed survey of northern Arizona. Sitgreaves and his party traversed the country from northern New Mexico to San Diego in the summer and fall of 1851, crossing northern Arizona and descending the Colorado to Yuma before crossing the desert.Wheat calls the map "a monumental achievement.generally correct and exceedingly well done."--Bill Reese, The Best Of The West-130. "The expedition consisted of Sitgreaves, Lt. J.G. Parke, Dr. S.W. Woodhouse, R.H. Kern, with Major H.L. Kendrick in command of the escort and Antoine Leroux as guide. The group left Santo Domingo, New Mexico, on August 1, 1851, stopped at Zuni in September, and arrived in San Diego on November 30. Carl Wheat discusses the route of the Sitgreaves expedition and highly praises the map, calling it "a monumental achievement.generally correct and.exceedingly well done."---Wagner-Camp 230:1. Original full calf lightly soiled and corners are rubbed, small 1" split at foot of front hinge, red & black morocco spine labels with titles stamped in gilt, some foxing to the front and rear first few leaves else a very good, internally clean, tight & sound copy with the 79 plates and the important map in exceptionally fine condition. This is an unusually nice copy in original calf binding.
