This is an example of Matthew Carey's 1795 reduction of Caleb and Harding Harris' unobtainable landmark map of Rhode Island. It is the earliest obtainable map of Rhode Island based on contemporaneous surveys and the first specific map of Rhode Island published…in the United States. (The Harris map has appeared only once on the market in the last 25 years.) Harris' mapping of the state remained cutting-edge until 1831 when Stevens published his Topographical Map of the State of Rhode Island . A Closer Look Cities, towns, and villages are labeled. Brown University is identified in Providence (labeled simply as 'College'), and the state's road network is illustrated. Rivers, lakes, and ponds appear, and townships are delineated. Narragansett Bay and its many islands are illustrated in detail. Publication History and Census This map was engraved by J. Smither and published by Matthew Carey in Carey's American Edition of Guthrie's Geography Improved in 1795. We note an example of the separate map in the collection at the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek. The complete atlas is well-represented in institutional collections. References: Rumsey 2542.007.
