Manhemsförbundet was a society with a Gothicistic-Christian program which the Swedish romantic author and social critic Almquist (1793-1866) joined in 1816. Among the members were J. A. Hazelius and his brothers, A. A. Afzelius, P. D. A. Atterbom, J. Börjesson, C. F. Dahlgren and A. Fryxell. "Handlingar till upplysning i Manhemsförbundets historia" is directed towards a larger audience. Almquist accounts for the different ranks in the society's organisation, their symbolism and mystery. The work, which is a revision of the suggestion Almquist presented to the society in 1816, was critizised by the anti-romantic, conservative camp of the Swedish literary scene at the time, and the success Almquist had anticipated failed to appear. The volume's second work is a rare defence against the above-mentioned criticism. The librarian, archivist and historian J. A. Almquist (1870-1950) was related to the author. His unusual bookplate is engraved by Robert Haglund. Apart from the text there is also an owl, a crosier, a lyre, a branch from a briar and a rod of Asclepius.

A story from New Holland" is probably the first Swedish work of fiction in which the story takes place in Australia, written by one of the most distinguished among Swedish 19th-century authors. Apart from New Holland the new continent is also called "Ulimaroa", a name Almquist probably had found in the writings of the Swedish geographer Daniel Djurberg. Both Cook and Banks had heard the word being used on New Zeeland as a term for Australia.
