Van de Roer utilizza una AuraCam, dispositivo inventato nel 1970, nel tentativo di registrare ciò che può vedere un fisico. I suoi soggetti - amici, familiari e personaggi famosi, compresi gli artisti Miranda July, Aurel Schmidt e Terence Koh, nonché l'autore James Frey - sono collegati con sensori alla fotocamera, che traduce il biofeedback in informazioni sul loro carattere e il modo in cui sono visti. Val Williams explains in the introduction that Van de Roer used an Aura camera, which captures biofeedback from the person being photographed, so that the print shows the person and the biofeedback he or she is giving off. The aura is like a colored fog obscuring the person. Van de Roer seems to be saying we are all obscured from one another. In The Portrait Machine Project, Brooklyn-based New Zealand photographer Carlo Van de Roer (born 1975) explores the idea that a camera can reveal otherwise hidden facets of a subject's character, and their relationsh…ip with the photographer and viewer. Van de Roer uses a Polaroid aura camera, developed in the 1970s in an attempt to record what a psychic might see. His subjects--friends, family, artists Miranda July, Terence Koh and Aurel Schmidt, author James Frey--are connected by sensors to the camera, which translates biofeedback into information about their characters and how they are viewed. The camera depicts this information as color in the Polaroid and as a printed description and diagram. In this, his first book, Van de Roer prompts us to question what we expect from a portrait, particularly when it's of someone we think we know.
