The authors were associated with the Department of Physiology and Biophysics of the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle. Male Sprague-Dawley…rats, individually caged, were exposed to low-level irradiation with chronic dosages from a CO-60 source for 16 hours a day. The animals were selected by weight and growth rated and divided into eight groups of 22 rats. With the exception of the relation between 0.60 and 0.28 r/day, the data was statistically significant at the 5% level. It was suggested that the effects of ionizing irradiation interact with the effect of environment in influencing longevity. The concept for the Radiation Research Society originated during a symposium held at Oberlin College, and shortly thereafter an organizing committee was assembled with Gioacchino Failla elected Chairman. The Committee proceeded to prepare the constitution and by-laws of the Radiation Research Society, ballots were mailed for the election of the first officers, and legally incorporated in the District of Columbia in March 1952. Radiation Research, the official journal of the Radiation Research Society, is a monthly peer-reviewed scientific journal covering research into the areas of biology, chemistry, medicine and physics, including epidemiology and translational research at academic institutions, private research institutes, research hospitals and government agencies. The editorial content of Radiation Research is devoted to every aspect of scientific research into radiation. The goal of the Journal is to provide researchers with the latest information in all areas of radiation science. Reprinted from Radiation Research, Volume 11, No. 4, October, 1959.

At 25 degrees C,…the oxygen consumption of the irradiated animals was higher than that of nonirradiated animals by the difference was not significant until the animals were 13 months old. There was no histologic evidence of irradiation injury in sections of the adrenal, the bone marrow, the ear (pinna), the eyes, the kidney, the liver, the lung, the lymph nodes, the peripheral blood, the pituitary, the prostate, the tail, the testis, the thyroid, and the tongue. The Testis was markedly atrophic, chronic pyelonephritis was common and ear lesions appeared in all the 5 degree C animals. The United States Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine (USAFSAM) is the United States Air Force (USAF) organization focused on education, research, and worldwide operational consultation in aerospace and operational medicine. USAFSAM was founded in 1918 to conduct research into the medical and physiologic domains related to human flight, and as a school for medical officers trained to support military aviation operations, later coined as flight surgeons. The school supported early military aviation from World War I through the evolution of aviation and into the modern era. USAFSAM actively supported civilian and military manned space missions through clinical and physiologic research. USAFSAM is the oldest continually operating school for flight surgeons and other operational medical personnel of its kind in the world. USAFSAM is located in Dayton, Ohio at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, and is part of the 711th Human Performance Wing (711 HPW) and the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL).
