Edition originale, complétée par l'abbé Teulière jusqu'en 1784 avec, à la fin du troisième volume, l'Histoire du siège de Montauban. Antoine de Cathala-Coture (1632-1724) fut une figure érudite du Quercy, né à Montauban et issu d'une famille d'avocats à la Cour des Aides. Lui-même avocat, il accéda à des responsabilités majeures comme maire de Montauban et subdélégué de l'intendant. L'époque dans laquelle il vécut, période de reconstruction culturelle et sociale en Quercy, fut propice à un travail d'érudition local. Le Quercy, région de conflits durant la guerre de Cent Ans puis bastion du protestantisme, connut une activité intellectuelle et religieuse dense, avec de nombreux notables et érudits soucieux de conserver la mémoire de leur territoire. Son histoire du Quercy se distingue par sa triple approche : l'histoire politique (événements, administration, privilèges locaux, particularismes, exemptions de la gabelle), l'histoire ecclésiastique (évêques de Cahors, histoire des abbayes, rivalités religieuses, rôle du clergé), et l'histoire littéraire (auteurs, érudits, productions culturelles du Quercy). Le livre recense aussi des aspects matériels : coutumes locales, structure urbaine, lois propres, et détaille l'influence des institutions ou des personnalités marquantes qui ont façonné la vie intellectuelle et sociale du Quercy du Moyen Âge au XVIIIe siècle. Parmi les sujets remarquables on notera l'étude des privilèges fiscaux du Quercy — "le Quercy exempt de la gabelle" —, l'émigration des populations sous certaines époques, ou encore l'étonnant rôle des confréries religieuses dans l'organisation sociale. L'auteur ne néglige pas les anecdotes locales, telles que les légendes liées aux villages, à la fondation d'abbayes, où à la curiosité comme celle de Marie de Médicis se faisant rapporter des stalagmites pour orner son palais. On retrouve également des chapitres sur le droit coutumier, la toponymie régionale, différents épisodes de résistance face au pouvoir royal, ainsi qu'une mise en lumière de personnalités quercynoises méconnues. Reliures légèrement frottées, quelques annotations au crayon, timbre humide d'ex-libris, encre sur la page de titre du tome II et autres défauts mineurs.
