With regard to style, these short symphonies of 1735 resemble the Neapolitan opera buffa, the descriptive title implying the beginning of stage works. Locatelli's works were well known throughout Europe until the end of the 18th century, although the composer led a very secluded life. He had no students and never performed in public. In his adopted city of Amsterdam he worked freelance, without allegiance to church or court, an unusual arrangement for a composer of the era.
