It is a look filtered through the senses and conflicting emotions of a youthful, uncertain American civilian, Charles R. Cawthon, who ~only scarcely trained ~ is assigned second lieutenant of an infantry platoon in a regiment that was in its Civil War days the famous Stonewall Brigade. The remembrance is of joining the regiment on the day of its muster, there to remain through arduous training, then through the unimaginable violence of ground combat. It is a story of survival through the support of the memorable men he commanded and those under whom he served. Chance, attrition, and the vagaries of war saw Cawthon become company commander, battalion adjutant, battalion executive, and finally battalion commander. Other Clay includes a rare, first~hand account of the initial assault at Omaha Beach; the "monstrous blood~bath" of the hedgerow battles culminating at Saint~Lo, the breakout of the beachhead; the siege of Brest; and a troop train journey to the battles being fought on the German border. There wounded, the author begins a lengthy passage through the hospital system, then rejoins his regiment for the wind down of the war in a defeated, desolate, and prostrate Germany. Other Clay is a touching reminiscence of a microcosm of the war in Westem Europe, of courage, fear, pride, hope, despair ~ all leavened by comradeship and humor, none of it every fully understood, but never forgotten nor regretted. Charles R. Cawthon retired in the grade of colonel, USAR, after 26 years of military service. His articles on World War II have appeared in American Heritage: The Magazine of History.
