Bound in stiff protective wrappers, pages uncut and unopened. Title-page creased and slightly foxed, dampstain to bottom margin of final leaf. In 1736 Swedish astronomer Anders Celsius (1701--1744) accompanied Pierre Louis Maupertuis on an expedition to Lapland organized by the French Academy of Sciences in order to measure the length of a degree along the meridian. This measurement, together with the equivalent measurement at the equator, gave the first confirmation of Newton's prediction that the Earth is flattened at the poles. Celsius is best known for the Celsius temperature scale, named after him, first proposed in a paper to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1742.

III, including the title-page of journal issue with engraved vignette. Celsius's article on the centigrade thermometric scale appears on pp. 171--180. Neatly taped at spine and loosely inserted in faded and discoloured card covers. Light toning and foxing to a few leaves. First printing, very rare, of Celsius's landmark paper in which he establishes the modern temperature scale, presented in a memoir read to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1742. As the 'constant degrees', or fixed points, Celsius chose the freezing and boiling points of water, calling the boiling point zero and the freezing point 100. These were later reversed. The 'centigrade' scale is now known as the Celsius scale and temperatures on this scale are measured in degrees Celsius.
