Libro Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Good. 1st Edition. "English Literature at the Close of the Middle Ages" by E. K. Chambers is a volume within the larger series, "Oxford History of English Literature. Published by Oxford University Press, this is the 1947 Second Printing. It would be hard to find an individual with a deeper understanding of the subject. The book remains one of the most important works on the subject of late medieval literature. The editors, in a brief note at the beginning of the book had this to say: " Sir Edmund Chamber's book . is the story of the medieval drama and the story of the ballad. The editors wished to give the author the opportunity of writing once more on subjects which have interested him in the past - the medieval drama, the carol and fifteenth century lyric, and Malory." The book contains an extremely generous Bibliography. ************************************** CONTENTS :: I. Medieval Drama (starting with Church services) / II. The Carol and Fifteenth - Century Lyric / III. Popular Narrative Poetry and the Ballad / IV. Malory / Bibliography/ Index / **************************************** SERIES : Oxford History of English Literature / SERIES EDITORS : F. P. Wilson and Bonamy Dobrée / TITLE : English Literature at the Close of the Middle Ages / AUTHOR : E. K. Chambers (Sir Edmund Kerchever Chambers, 1866 - 1954) / IMPRINT : Oxford University Press / PLACE : Oxford (at the Clarendon Press) / DATE : (1947) / EDITION : Second Printing / PRINTER : Charles Batey / DETAILS : Trade hardcover; contains a Bibliography, and an Index; (ii) + 247 pages; 5 1/2" x 8 1/2"; dark blue smooth cloth-covered boards and spine; gilt lettering on spine; bottom edge of text-block is rough-cut; sans jacket ************************************ CONDITION . NEAR VERY GOOD This is a previously owned book which remains clean, solid, and serviceable - having an inked ownership signature with address inscription, and no other interior markings :: EXTERIOR : Spine extremities compressed and displaying mild fraying; boards display modest weathering and a slight bend (curvature); text-block edges are slightly toned, else clean. The book just misses being very good in condition, having a slightly worn exterior. It has been well-read, but not abused. / BINDING : Opens easily, but remains solid / INTERIOR : Previous owner's inked signature with address at the top fore-edge corner of the front free end-paper ( I have not been able to decipher the name); Mild weathering to end-papers, but, aside from the previous owner s signature, interior is clean and free of marking.
