No epoch in the history of a nation can be more fittingly named after a man than modern India after Raja Rammohun Roy; and no man has adjuster right to be called the prophet of an era than the Raja of the present epoch in India. Rammohun Roy was born at a momentous juncture in the history of India and was, under the providence of God, destined to mould the national life in all its bearings, as few have done in the history of the race. The political, social and religious life of New India has been permanently stamped with the personality of Rammohun Roy and his name will remain indissolubly associated with the history of modern India. At the time of Rammohun Roy's birth a dense cloud of darkness was brooding over the country. About The Editors : Sophia Dobson Collet (18221894) was a 19th-century English feminist freethinker. Sophia Dobson Collet was born Sophia Dobson in the parish of St. Pancras, London, the fifth of seven children of John Dobson (17781827), and his wife (and first cousin), Elizabeth Barker (17871875). She was described by Richard Garnett in the biography of William Johnson Fox as having attacks of a "disabling illness". Her elder brother was the Chartist radical Collet Dobson Collet (18121898).Another of her brothers was the engineer Edward Dobson (1816/171908). She was the aunt of social reformer Clara Collet (18601948), who worked with Charles Booth on his great investigative work Life and Labour of the People of London; and Sir Wilfred Collet, governor of British Honduras and British Guiana. Stepping into the pages of this book, readers will encounter the captivating journey and legacy of Raja Rammohun Roy, hailed as the 'Father of Modern India.' The author paints a vivid portrait of this visionary who, against the backdrop of India's rich past, emerged as a beacon of progress during a period of transition and cultural stagnation. Through insightful analysis, the book delves into Roy's pivotal role in India's intellectual, social, and religious awakening. Roy's relentless pursuit of knowledge led him to embrace Western education, paving the way for the introduction of modern scientific learning and critical thinking. The author highlights his instrumental efforts in encouraging the translation of classical Indian literature and his unwavering advocacy for the abolition of inhumane practices like Sati. Roy's crusade extended beyond the realm of social reform; he challenged traditional caste hierarchies, championed women's rights, and ignited a spiritual revolution through the founding of the Brahmo Samaj, a progressive religious movement that transcended sectarian boundaries. The author masterfully weaves together the strands of Roy's life and work, shedding light on the profound impact he had on Indian society. This book is not merely a historical account; it is an exploration of the profound ideas that shaped a nation's trajectory and continue to resonate with contemporary readers. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
