Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fair. photos, 194p. Original blue cloth. dj. 19 cm. Jacket heavily chipped, has several ring marks and is soiled. Former owner's name on front free endpaper. Foreword by Adam Clayton Powell, Sr. An admiring son's biography of his father (J. B. Boddie) who served as pastor of the Bethesda Baptist Church (an African American church) in New Rochelle, NY from 1907 until his death in 1936. Boddie, who was self-educated, was a prominent and physically imposing Baptist preacher filling many pulpits and speaking at colleges and seminaries and the Baptist Ministers' conferences. Pages 143-194 contain the rhyming multi-stanza annual poems that he wrote, perhaps for his congregation, between 1908 and 1926, omitting only 1923 when he was too distraught over the death of his son Benjamin to write an annual poem. Rev. Boddie was 64 when he died in 1936.
