Paperback. Condizione: Fair. Set in rural Pennyslvania in the 1760s, this tale of horror and mystery is based on an actual case of a New York farmer who murdered his family. The author employs Gothic devices and sensational features such as spontaneous combustion, ventriloquism, and religious fanaticism. Fiendish Carwin uses his influence over Clara Wieland and her family, destroying the order and authority of the small community in which they live. The novel examines some fundamental issues crucial to the survival of democracy in the new American republic. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Called a remarkable story by John Greenleaf Whittier and described by John Keats as very powerful, Wieland, Charles Brockden Brown's disturbing 1798 tale of terror, is a masterpiece involving spontaneous combustion, disembodied voices, religious mania, and a gruesome murder based on a real-life incident. This Modern Library Paperback Classic includes Wieland's fragmentary sequel, Memoirs of Carwin the Biloquist, as well as several other important but hard-to-find Brockden Brown short stories, including Thessalonica, Walstein's School of History, and Death of Cicero. This collection also reproduces the newspaper account of the murder that inspired Wieland.…

Paperback. Condizione: Fair. One of the earliest American novels, Wieland (1798) is a thrilling tale of suspense and intrigue set in rural Pennyslvania in the 1760s. Based on an actual case of a New York farmer who murdered his family, the novel employs Gothic devices and sensational elements such as spontaneous combustion, ventriloquism, and religious fanaticism. The plot turns on the charming but diabolical intruder Carwin, who exercises his power over the narrator, Clara Wieland, and her family, destroying the order and authority of the small community in which they live. Underlying the mystery and horror, however, is a profound examination of the human mind's capacity for rational judgement. The text also explores some of the most important issues vital to the survival of democracy in the new American republic. Brown further considers power and manipulation in his unfinished sequel, Memoirs of Carwin the Biloquist, which traces Carwin's career as a disciple of the utopist Ludloe.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. Brown is often called the first American novelist. Originally published in 1799, Ormondwas inspired by enlightenment philosophers and Gothic writers. The novel engages with many of the period's popular debates about women's education, marriage, and the morality of violence, while the plot revolves around the Gothic themes of seduction, murder, incest, impersonation, romance and disease. Set in post-revolutionary Philadelphia, Ormondexamines the prospects of the struggling nation by tracing the experiences of Constantia, a young virtuous republican who struggles to survive when her father's business is ruined by a confidence man, and her friends and neighbors are killed by a yellow fever epidemic.…

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Charles Brockden Brown is widely considered one of early America's foremost writers, despite dying before the age of 40. His works were hailed as the predecessor of works such as James Fenimore Cooper's. Here's an excerpt from the beginning: The following Work is delivered to the world as the first of a series of performances, which the favorable reception of this will induce the Writer to publish. His purpose is neither selfish nor temporary, but aims at the illustration of some important branches of the moral constitution of man. Whether this tale will be classed with the ordinary or frivolous sources of amusement, or be ranked with the few productions whose usefulness secures to them a lasting reputation, the reader must be permitted to decide. The incidents related are extraordinary and rare. Some of them, perhaps, approach as nearly to the nature of miracles as can be done by that which is not truly miraculous. It is hoped that intelligent readers will not disapprove of the manner in which appearances are solved, but that the solution will be found to correspond with the known principles of human nature. The power which the principal person is said to possess can scarcely be denied to be real. It must be acknowledged to be extremely rare; but no fact, equally uncommon, is supported by the same strength of historical evidence. Some readers may think the conduct of the younger Wieland impossible. In support of its possibility the Writer must appeal to Physicians and to men conversant with the latent springs and occasional perversions of the human mind. It will not be objected that the instances of similar delusion are rare, because it is the business of moral painters to exhibit their subject in its most instructive and memorable forms. If history furnishes one parallel fact, it is a sufficient vindication of the Writer; but most readers will probably recollect an authentic case, remarkably similar to that of Wieland. It will be necessary to add, that this narrative is addressed, in an epistolary form, by the Lady whose story it contains, to a small number of friends, whose curiosity, with regard to it, had been greatly awakened. It may likewise be mentioned, that these events took place between the conclusion of the French and the beginning of the revolutionary war. The memoirs of Carwin, alluded to at the conclusion of the work, will be published or suppressed according to the reception which is given to the present attempt.…
