Clyman was a guide, trapper and 'mountain man' from the early 1820s until 1848, when he settled in California's Napa Valley and lived out his days as a prosperous farmer. He was one of the first white men to traverse South Pass (in 1826), and was a frequent companion of the likes of John Charles Fremont, Jedediah Smith and Thomas Fitzpatrick. This text of his diaries was originally published in installments in the California Historical Society Quarterly from 1925 to 1927, and issued in book form by the Society in 1928, in a small edition of 300 copies Howes calls this 'One of the most trustworthy narratives of the far west, for the period 1842-6; the only Oregon overland journal of 1844' -- Howes C81.
