As issued --- Beautifully fresh copy, uncut, of this uncommon account of the ongoing Russo-Turkish war in Europe. Published one year after the very rare first, this second edition is enlarged with 'diverses observations sur les grandes actions qui se sont passées dans la dernière guerre d'Hongrie & dans la présente en Moldavie'.… It covers in great details and acute observations the Turkish and Russian military capacities, together with their respective allies. This particular Russo-Turkish war broke out in 1768 due to tensions within Poland, where the throne was occupied by King Stanislaus Agustus Poniatowski, a former favorite of Empress Catherine II; and the power behind it effectively held by the Russian ambassador Nikolai Repnin and the Russian army. The war resulted in 1774 with a decisive Russian victory that brought Southern Ukraine, Northern Caucasus and Crimea within the orbit of the Russian Empire. Warnery (1719/2086) was a Swiss born General of Hussars, Royal Prussian Colonel, Polish Major General and military theorist - also in the service of the Tsar, hence the pro-Russian bias of his writing. Provenance: Pr. Philip Longworth (1933-2020, historian, writer and book collector, esp. on Russian history). Large paper copy uncut with wide margins & with large bookplate for "The Cavalry Club", London, inside front board, this is specially designed by Nevile Wilkinson (He was Ulster King of Arms & Dollhouse designer). Bound in three-quarter plum morocco with silk weave cloth boards, silk page marker, 5 raised bands and gilt titles on the spine, spine a little rubbed at edges, the binding dates to the age of the bookplate, plates at variant to the plate list. A Little light spotting to margins otherwise very good+. Quarto. 1805. *NOTE: Originally printed in 1798, this 2nd edition is as scarce, this copy with the 3 extra plates (uncalled for) are of "Chasseurs" and numbered 25 (the other 2 NOT numbered & which are NOT in the plate list at rear 2 unmounted Chasseurs+ "British Heavy Dragoon 1798" + an untitled officer on horseback similar to "Light Dragoon" depicted in the frontispiece but this has more detail to the accoutrement's in his dress, either a more closely observed image of the same officer or a similar regiment. The sword seems straighter on the 2nd example? This copy is possibly Unique. **The Cavalry Club, begun in 1890 (period of the binding) was amalgamated with the Guards Club in 1975. Second, enlarged edition, published a year after the first and now including "diverses observations sur les grandes actions qui se sont passées dans la dernière guerre d'Hongrie, et dans la présente… en Moldavie". This is the first work of the Swiss-born De Warnery (1720-86), published in a German translation as early as 1766 (purportedly against his own wishes): according to the author, never one to eschew self-aggrandizement, he was the first to "unmask the Turks" and show that they did not warrant the fear with which they were usually viewed (cf. ADB XLI, 176). The plates show suggestions for battle arrays. - Unobtrusive repairs to lower cover of the appealing binding. Variously browned and brownstained due to paper. Rare.
