Reliure plein marbré de l'époque, dos lisse orné de filets et du titre, frappés à l'or fin, pièce de titre en maroquin Bordeaux. Très bel état, bel exemplaire. On ne sait pas grand-chose sur le chevalier de Cerfvol. On a supposé qu'il était un avocat à la solde de Louis XV, chargé de légitimer le divorce pour lui permettre de se remarier avec Mme Du Barry. On lui a attribué l'identité de Linguet ou du duc d'Aiguillon et de Palissot de Montenoy. Ses conceptions sur la population sont exposées dans cet ouvrage ; Spengler le classe parmi les "repopulationistes". Parmi ces remèdes, pour accroître la population, il défend l'établissement du divorce. « Nos tribunaux retentissent des meurtres auxquels le désespoir entraîne des époux malheureux ».

A plea for the confiscation of the properties of the church, embroidering on the theme treated earlier by the marquis de Puysegur (Discussion interessante sur la pretention du clerge d'etre le premier ordre d'un etat, 1767). The present worldly possesssions prevent…the clergy to devote all their attention to the religious and moral welfare of the people and hence the welfare of the whole nation. The state on the other hand can make much better use of the properties of the church in the interest of the whole nation. The author also argues for reducing the number of priests and monks, the 'class of bachelors of the State'. The author is best known by his plea for the legislation of divorce (Legislation du divorce, 1769) and for an important treatise on population (Memoire sur la population, 1768), for which he was grouped by Spengler among the 'repopulationists'. Nothing seems known about the author other than that he was a lawyer. A third edition of this was published in 1791 with the author's name. *Barbier II,c.1123. INED 1013 (at length). Ce Mémoire s'inscrit dans le débat sur les causes de la supposée dépopulation de la France au XVIIIe siècle : "moins d'hommes, mo…ins de productions de matières premières, moins de travaux de toute espèce ; plus de besoin ; plus d'impôts par conséquent". Prenant parti pour les "déclinistes", l'auteur voit la "vraie cause de la dépopulation" dans "l'indissolubilité des mariages". Il préconise en conséquence de légaliser le divorce ; et recommande également de favoriser le mariage des militaires. "L'usage du Divorce contraste avec la perfection Chrétienne. Qui le nie ? Mais combien de choses proscrites par la discipline Religieuse ou politique, sont néanmoins tolérées, par la seule raison qu'un vice fait moins de progrès sous la main du Magistrat". Der Autor untersucht die Entwicklung der Bevölkerung Frankreichs undmeint, dass man sie erhöhen sollte. - Über den Chevalier de Cerfvol scheint nu…r bekannt zu sein, dass er Rechtsanwalt war. der Verfasser ist der Ansicht, dass die Bevölkerung Frankreichs von 24 Millionen im 16. Jahrhundert auf 18,7 Millionen im Jahr 1700 zurückgegangen war. Seine Zahlen erscheinen zweifelhaft, trotzdem sind seine Berechnungen erwähnenswert, denn sie stellen "den ersten Entwurf dar., was heute als Nettoreproduktionsrate bezeichnet wird". Die Hauptursache der Entvölkerung Frankreichs siehrt der Verfasser die Unauflöslichkeit der Ehe, und alles andere leitet sich daraus ab: Zölibat, Verschwendung, die Unfruchtbarkeit so vieler Ehen aufgrund körperlicher Impotenz oder Unvereinbarkeit der Charaktere usw. Daher betrachtet Cerfvol die Legalisierung der Scheidung als das beste Mittel gegen die Entvölkerung. Er schlägt vor, dass der Staat die Heirat von Soldaten erleichtern soll. Laut Sauvy wurde das Buch beschlagnahmt und verbrannt, aber der Satz erhalten und für eine neue Ausgabe verwendet, die 1770 in Genf unter dem Titel "De l utilite civile et politique du divorce" veröffentlicht wurde.

The author investigates the development of the population of France, arguing that it should be increased. - Nothing appears known about the chevalier de Cerfvol other than that he was a…lawyer; Spengler groups him with the "repopulationists". Cerfvol holds that the population of France had declined from 24 millions in the 16th century to 18.7 millions in 1700, and that since then the population had declined again by about half. Though his figures seem doubtful, his calculations are worth noting because they represent "the first draft of what nowadays is called the net rate of reproduction". The main cause of the depopulation of France, according to Cerfvol, is the indissolubility of marriage, and all other causes are merely derived from this: celibacy, profiglacy, the infertility of so many marriages because of physical impotence or incompatibility of characters, etc. Hence, Cerfvol considers the legalization of divorce as the best remedy against depopulation. In addition, he suggests that the state facilitate the marriage of soldiers, including support for their families and provisions for widows and orphans, which also would induce foreigners to join the army. According to Sauvy, the book was seized and burnt, but the type-setting preserved and used for a new edition published in Geneva in 1770 under the title "De l'utilite civile et politique du divorce". - Neat repair to one leaf. Un des premiers travaux importants sur la population que Cerfvol essaya de faire passer comme étant de Voltaire, supercherie qui fut aisément démasquée par Grimm. L'ouvrage fut du reste saisi et détruit ; mais les formes d'imprimerie ont été conservées et ont servi à une réimpression sous le titre De l'Utilité civile et politique du Divorce, Genève, 1770. On a peu de renseignements sur la vie de ce jurisconsulte de la seconde moitié du XVIIIe siècle que Spengler a classé parmi les « repopulationnistes ». Le point de départ de sa doctrine est, en effet, la profonde dépopulation qu'il attribue à la France. Il se livre pour cela à un curieux calcul qui mérite attention, parce qu'on y trouve la première ébauche de ce que nous appelons aujourd'hui le taux net de reproduction. Cerfvol attribue les causes de cette dépopulation au célibat, et à sa suite le libertinage, l'indissolubilité du mariage et la stérilité de nombreux couples mariés etc. ; parmi les remèdes, il se prononce pour l'établissement du divorce, le mariage des soldats, l'accueil des soldats étrangers qui en se mariant deviennent français etc. Kress 6531 ; Einaudi 979 ; INED 1017 ; Spengler pp. 94-96.2. Moreau a foi en la caisse des amortisements, et il essaye de prouver qu'il n'y a point d'injustice dans la règle des remboursements que le Roi s'est proposé ; que cette règle aux remboursements effectifs, il y aura assez loin pour que le public revienne de la frayeur causée par les récents édits. Tirage différent de l'INED 3276, Kress 6123 et Einaudi 4011.

Ottime condizioni, salvo poche ingialliture marginali. Prima traduzione italiana con falsi dati di edizione (secondo Parenti stampata in Toscana) di opera apparsa in francese nel 1772. L'autore che fu giureconsulto alla corte di Luigi XV ed esponente del popolazionismo, scrisse in favore della legalizzazione del divorzio come mezzo d'incremento delle nascite.

Rare sole edition of this manual for the education of girls, claiming a dir…ect lineage from Rousseau's Emile (1762) but also containing the author's reflections on the role of women in procreation and France's declining population. "Both Sophie, the orphaned adolescent girl, and the guardian in charge of her education appear as the protagonists of a fiction, similar to Emile and his preceptor in Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Emile, ou de l'Éducation." (Berenguier). Nadine Berenguier (Conduct Books for Girls in Enlightenment France) goes so far as to call La Gamologie a 'social engineering program'. "Echoing Rousseau's Emile as well as contemporary medical treatises, he asked soon-to-be mothers to care for their children themselves and enthusiastically promoted maternal breastfeeding while banning outdated childrearing practices Among the conduct books that favored positive maternal representations, La Gamologie was the most extensive in its prescriptive mission." The work is couched as a series of letters from an 'educator' to his orphaned adolescent pupil, aptly named Sophie (the same name given to the female protagonist in Emile). "Cerfvol's focus on Sophie's functions as a wife and mother echoed Emile in many ways. The happy ending of Emile became the starting point in La Gamologie, which expanded the advice that newlywed Emile and Sophie had received from Emile's mentor about ways to keep their conjugal relationship happy and lasting. Like Rousseau, Cerfvol opted for a utopia, in which Sophie embodied what every woman should become: a wife who put all her energy into satisfying her husband and a mother entirely devoted to raising the children born from their happy union" (Berenguier). Cerfvol's running title throughout both parts of the work is, rather atply, "La Science du Mariage". First edition of this prodivorce Enlightenment tract by Cerfvol, almost certainly a pseudonym, "whose rate of divorce-tract production equalled that of John Milton" (Phillips, p. 168). Originating in an analysis of France's depopulation, Cerfvol argues that divorce encourages procreation and has the potential to promote equality… between the sexes, seeing "the indissolubility of marriage as a form of enslavement, and divorce as a way of maintaining individual liberty" (Roulston, p. 46). It is bound with five other works, including a lunar utopia. Cerfvol published nine works favouring divorce within a seven year period, written from the perspectives of both husband and wife, but acknowledging that women were under greater restrictions than men. Their focus on population situates them as a precursor of Malthus (Spengler, pp. 94-6). "In the Cerfvol oeuvre of prodivorce works, every device known to 18th-century fiction was employed to persuade readers; it is a veritable encylopedia of rhetorical strategies. Arguments against indissolubility were presented as epistolary exchange, dialogue, and confession; miniature exemplary narratives of marital misery were analyzed and commented upon by sympathetic personages" (Blum, p. 71). Cri d'une honnête femme qui reclame le divorce is written from the point of view of a woman trapped in a miserable marriage, yearning to be free to resume life and become a mother.
