Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware -Academic Paper from the year 2020 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: International relations, grade: A, , language: English, abstract: Peace and security in Africa has been an issue of concern not only within the region but also for the international community because of the negative consequences of conflict in the continent since the 1960s. One of the threats to Africäs regional security is the proliferation of nuclear weapons. African states are not involved in nuclear proliferation as none of the 54 countries is a nuclear state. With the Pelindaba Treaty, Africa has washed its hands off proliferation of nuclear weapons and becomes a nuclear weapons free zone. However, Africa is infested with a plethora of security challenges including terrorism and insurgency, which could be compounded if the various terrorist and insurgent groups in the continent could get hold of nuclear weapon. The precarious state of regional security demands that Africa gets active in non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.Using secondary data, the paper argued that non-proliferation of nuclear weapons is important for peace and security in Africa. It noted that the prospect for a nuclear war is higher in the world today than it has ever been and Africa stands to lose woefully in the advent of a nuclear war. The paper noted that Africäs security dilemma would be compounded by nuclear arms race. The paper recommends that African state should focus on addressing the security and humanitarian challenges exacerbated by the proliferation of small arms and light weapons as well as governance deficit. Additionally, African countries must support the UN the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty and finally, African countries need to rise up to the root causes of insecurity in the region by addressing poverty, youth bulge, unemployment, infrastructural deficit, ethno-religious rivalry, bad governance and corruption as well as drug and substance abuse. It is the submission of this paper that Africa must continue to speak with one voice in support of nuclear non-proliferation in Africa and the world in general as well as do more to curb the proliferation of small arms and light weapons.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 20 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware -Academic Paper from the year 2020 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Peace and Conflict Studies, Security, grade: A, , course: Strategic Studies, language: English, abstract: The paper focuses on the implications of insurgencies in the Sahel region for Nigeria. The Sahel region is one of the poorest and least developed in the world. In recent years, there are over 73 insurgent groups including Boko Haram and Ansaru operating in the region and unleashing unprecedented humanitarian and security challenges. The paper used secondary data to underpin the fact that despite multinational efforts to address the security and humanitarian challenges created by both insurgencies and climate change, the Sahel remains a problematic enclave for countries in the region including Nigeria. The paper highlights socio-economic, security and environmental implications of the growing insurgencies in the region for Nigeria. Some recommendations such as improving border security through technology, enhanced human security, deliberate countering of jihadist narrative and improved military capability of nations in the region were made. The paper submits that kinetic and non-kinetic approach must be applied to degrade and defeat insurgencies in the Sahel and Nigeria in particular.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 24 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware -Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2022 in the subject Organisation and administration - Public safety and order, grade: A, , course: Strategic Studies, language: English, abstract: This paper examined the effects of proliferation of small arms and light weapons on national security in Nigeria. It utilized secondary sources of data as well as employed the critical theory to explain the relationship between proliferation of small arms and light weapons and national security in Nigeria. The widespread demand, use and abuse of small arms and light weapons in Nigeria pose serious security and developmental challenges to the country. Some of the implications of this is that Government resources are diverted away from socio-economic and developmental projects to defense and security and human rights abuses which undermine human security are rife. For instance, Nigeria has spent over US$9billion since 2019 trying to curb insecurity this fund would have been channeled into education or health system to boost the welfare of the people. 32 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware -Academic Paper from the year 2020 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Peace and Conflict Studies, Security, grade: A, , course: Political Science & International Relations, language: English, abstract: The outbreak of Corona Virus Disease (COVID) 2019 in Wuhan China and its spread across 213 countries and territories around world has profoundly impacted humanity and global economy. This paper explored the impact of COVID 19 on human security in Nigeria in order to proffer some strategies to mitigate the negative consequences on the people. Nigeria had her COVID 19 index case in February 2020 and since then more than 50,000 Nigerians have tested positive to the disease and about 1000 deaths have been recorded with new cases being recorded daily.Materials and Methods:The paper used secondary sources of data collected from published and unpublished materials. The collected data were analysed qualitatively using logical deduction supported by human security theory. Results:It was revealed that COVID 19 complicated human insecurity already in existence in Nigeria by exacerbating conflict and poverty in the country. It also worsens food insecurity in millions of homes and economic security of Nigerians who were prevented from moving about ekeing out a living. The World Bank projected that five million Nigerians would be pushed into poverty due to COVID 19. The pandemic threatened the safety of the people from such chronic threats as hunger, disease and repression and there were hurtful disruptions in the patterns of daily life due to the measures imposed by the Federal Government of Nigeria to mitigated COVID 19 such as lockdown, isolation and quarantine. Furthermore, COVID 19 in Nigeria also exposed the poor state of infrastructure such as potable water, electricity, decent housing and markets in the country Some of the strategies to curb the impact would include institutionalization of disease early warning systems in all the 774 local government areas in Nigeria. It is also important for government to ensure that the citizens of Nigeria buy into whatever effort is being made and the urgent need to alleviate poverty through social safety nets and sound economic policy. The FGN should support and encourage local alternative medicines that could be integrated into orthodox medicine to mitigate epidemics and pandemics in the country. Mobilize domestic resources for health systems and the elimination of high-burden diseases, prevention and management of diseases outbreaks in NigeriaConclusion: It is the submission of the paper that human security has been undermined in Nigeria as a result of COVID 19. 24 pp. Englisch.
