A rigorously self-critical man he has learned from his mistakes. "One's failures are the foundation of success" has been a guiding principle of his life. His autobiography, first serialized in the Nikkei newspaper in December of 1996, is more a catalogue of his early failures than his considerable successes in his Tokyo shop, Fugendo, the Tokyo Bijutsu Club and auction rooms in London, New York and Paris.
