As Director of Exhibitions and Publications at the Museum of Modern Art from 1939 to 1967, Monroe Wheeler heavily influenced typography, book design, and the development of the museum exhibition catalogue. During his tenure at MoMA, Wheeler developed close relationships with many of the artists he exhibited and published. Season's Greetings is a volume of over fifty handmade art objects and limited printings that were sent to Wheeler from artists, many of whom he knew intimately, including never-before-seen work by such luminaries as Jean Cocteau, Ben Shahn, Miguel Covarrubias, Rufino Tamayo, Robert Parker, Roberto Montenegro, Herbert Bayer, and Max Weber. Essays by Allen Ellenzweig, Joseph Scott IV and Vincent Cianni establish the importance of this vast archive of art, letters, and ephemera, and highlight Wheeler's wide influence within his field. Season's Greetings is a fitting tribute to a man whose life's work centered on and celebrated fine art publications. Vincent Cianni is a documentary photographer and archivist for the Estate of Anatole Pohorilenko and the Monroe Wheeler Archive. He teaches at Parsons, The New School for Design in New York City, and has authored two books, including Gays in the Military, published by Daylight Books in 2014. Joseph Scott IV, Philadelphia, PA, became caretaker of the Manhattan apartment of Monroe Wheeler in 1990 to assist with organizing and preserving this important archive. His work continues today, as executor for Anatole Pohorienko, to help finish cataloging the remaining material for Mr. Wheeler, Glenway Wescott and George Platt Lynes. Allen Ellenzweig, New york, NY, is an arts critic and cultural commentator currently preparing a biography of twentieth-century photographer George Platt Lynes for Oxford University Press. He is a contributing writer to the Gay & Lesbian Review Worldwide and has published in Art in America, PASSION: the Magazine of Paris, Studies in Gender and Sexuality, and the online magazine Tablet. He has also published works of short fiction. His landmark 1992 illustrated history, The Homoerotic Photograph: Male Images from Durieu/Delacroix to Mapplethorpe, was reissued in paperback by Columbia University Press in 2012. He teaches in the Writing Program at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey. He is a founding board member of The Robert Giard Foundation which offers an annual fellowship to photographers, videographers, or filmmakers.

Prima edizione
Soft cover. Condizione: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 74 pages. Published in 2012. Exhibition Catalog. One of the most important exhibition catalogs on its subject in our time. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a softcover original only. The Exhibition Catalog is now scarce. A brilliant production by Adam Holtzman: Regular-sized volume format. Pictorial softcovers with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs and text by Samantha Appleton, Vincent Cianni, Ashley Gilbertson, and Stephanie Sinclair. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name held at the Stephen Daiter Gallery Chicago in 2012. Presents "Collateral Damage: The Human Face of War". Gripping images of war and its even more affecting aftermath. "Whether it is Vincent Cianni's black-and-white portraits of gay soldiers under the contradictory and compromised reign of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell', Stephanie Sinclair's searing color scenes of Afghan women who have taken violence unto themselves and committed acts of self-immolation, or Samantha Appleton's war-zone shots, such as a jihadi in Iraq praying alone inside the walls of a bombed-out house, this powerful show fills in the picture of the realities of war beyond the battles. Collateral damage means much more than civilian casualties and properties destroyed. It is the effect of war on individuals that will last lifetimes" (Michael Weinstein). The book features a stunning multi-panel foldout of Ashley Gilbertson's panoramic photographs of empty rooms in American suburbia. They are the bedrooms of dead young American soldiers, in the homes where they were born and grew up, left "as is" by their grieving parents: An 18-year-old man's diplomas, awards, and trophies neatly and proudly on display. Another bedroom overflowing with yet another dead 18-year-old's regalia, sports posters, and girlie pin-ups, emblems of American adolescence and virility. A woman-soldier's room decorated with lush house plants. In a way that only photographs can evoke, they are about absence and presence at the same time: The young lives snuffed out and gone, their "human remains" left behind, helping keep their memory alive. An absolute "must-have" title for Samantha Appleton, Vincent Cianni, Ashley Gilbertson, and Stephanie Sinclair collectors. This title is a contemporary art photography classic. This is one of few copies of the Exhibition Catalog still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with black-and-white and color plates. Four of the most brilliant American photographers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO PETER VAN AGTMAEL AND RYAN SPENCER REED TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0985952903. no.

Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. No Jacket. Cianni, Vincent [photographs] (illustratore). WE SKATE HARDCORE: PHOTOGRAPHS FROM BROOKLYN'S SOUTHSIDE [DVD included], written and photographed by Vincent Cianni, hardcover, illustrated, 2004. BOOK CONDITION: near fine. The text block and illustrations are in fine condition with no tears, marks, or dog ears. There is no bookplate or signature of a previous owner. Not a remainder or library book. The illustrated boards are in near fine condition (light bumping of two corners). 7 ½ x 9 ¼, 140 pages, 21 ounces XX [from the back cover] An amazingly vivid documentary that runs the full gamut from exhilaration to devastation, and back, It's more exhilarating than not, though, because it is about how kids invent their own lives, whatever life has handed them (Luc Sante). XX Cianni's photographs bear faces of an enduring working class, the people of Los Sures in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. You see their desire for life, family, home, and community, to move forward and become someone. You also see in these bold as well as intimate portraits, scenes, action shots, and still video sequences, the life, blood, spirit, conscience, pride, and zeal of young in-line skaters and their tribes. In-line skating is their passion and passage through life as they move, groove, glide, and fly (Juan Sanchez, Hunter College). XX The stunning photographs Of WE SKATE HARDCORE reveal the determination and the dreams of urban Latino youth coming of age in New York City. Vincent Cianni spent eight years photographing and documenting a group of Latino in-line skaters in the Southside of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. In this book, he weaves together images of the skaters with their own words, showing the skaters' struggles to find a place to skate and build skate parks, and to survive in the city. In the evacuated industrial spaces of their neighborhood, the skaters carve out places for enjoying their sport and showing off their skills, often thwarting established rules and authority figures in the process. Their stories are both personal and resonant; they reflect the trials and tenacity of a young urban culture, as well as life in Southside's Latino community. [n addition to black-and-white and color photos, WE SKATE HARDCORE includes a DVD with footage of the skaters featured in the book as well as additional photographs and an interview with the photographer. XX VINCENT CIANNI began photographing the Southside of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, in 1994. He teaches photography at Parsons School of Design and exhibits his photographs both nationally and internationally.
