Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Frank's War in a Thornycroft - (An Army Service Corps Diary). Frank Sanderson was born and raised in the City of Hull before he enlisted into the Army Service Corps in 1915. He did this out of an Edwardian workaday sense of duty and honour, and even though it was against military law, he ke…pt a daily diary about his war experiences. Frank wrote in his journals every day from the 29th April 1915 until the 12th January 1917, the book takes us from enlistment, through his limited two week military training and right up to his last day at Albert in France. Frank's last entry in the left hand column simply reads, '12th'. This book isn't about the usual, 'Life in the Trenches' type of manuscript that has been published by an 'Officer and a Gentleman'. For any Great War aficionado, or even for those with a modicum of interest in the First World War, this book is a fascinating read about the detailed life of an Army Driver serving in the British Army at the turn of the last century. This book records the exact words that have been penned by a down to earth Private soldier who came from Hull, a young man who simply did his duty for King and Country whilst driving various army lorries. These recently found journals give the reader an everyday insight into what it was like for an army driver serving on the Western Front during the First World War. Private Frank Sanderson tells us in detail what he had for Christmas Dinner in 1916, the exact details of what clothing and equipment he was issued on a particular day and he also tells us about the mechanical problems drivers suffered with their vehicles. In the diaries we also learn about the Standard Operating Procedures of 282 Company ASC who were deployed to France in support of 13th and 19th Siege Batteries of the Royal Artillery. Private Frank Sanderson was born in the late 1800's and came from a working class family, this might lead people into thinking he was just an ignorant lower class ruffian. But Frank's penmanship betrays an eloquent and intelligent young man of whom the County of Yorkshire can be very proud. A young man who didn't join the fashionable Infantry, Royal Artillery or Cavalry Regiments, Frank was simply a young man from Hull who quietly and modestly went to War in a Thornycroft lorry. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Most books written about the British Army contain stories about the Infantry, Royal Artillery, Army Air Corps and/or its Armoured Regiments. They generally tell stories of how brave the protagonists within each Regiment were and how their actions usually changed the course of each battle or… firefight. Great reading for most schoolboys and aspiring 2nd Lieutenants and of course these stories are deservingly told in vast volumes of books. But stories of who actually supported these Regiments and got them to the right place with the right equipment is rarely told, probably because stories of the supporting Corps and their soldiers are deemed to be too routine and dull for anyone to read. But If it wasn't for these so called REMF's (Rear Echelon Mother F*****'s) then Britain's fighting forces would be about as much use as a Regiment of traffic wardens. They might look good in uniform but when it comes to defeating the enemy they can't do it without vast amounts of fuel, ammunition, rations, communications, medical support etc. Books written by Corps Officers don't help in portraying the 'Rear Echelon Troops' with a more exciting vision either, they're usually written with quotes like, 'If the strategic role of the blah blah blah was militarily blah blah blah and 17 Corps was in the vanguard blah blah bleeding blah. The small amount of reading materiel written by Corps officers rarely tells the stories of the soldiers serving under them, but they will tell you about when this Corps or that Division did something or other quite tedious and impersonal. 'Rickshaws, Camels and Taxis' (Rogues, Ruffians and Officers of the Royal Corps of Transport) will hopefully go some-way towards disproving the myth that its soldiers and officers are uninteresting and not noteworthy. The interviewees in this book have great stories to tell about how they dominated army boxing in the 1970's, how some of them coped with prison sentences at the Military Correction Training Centre (MCTC) in Colchester, about being ambushed whilst on a Combat Logistics patrol in Iraq and what happened when one of the Corps' Staff Sergeants had a loaded pistol shoved in his face in Belfast. The contents of this book doesn't tell the reader about Britain's amazing fighting Regiments who have defeated an enemy force to protect our green and pleasant land, it quite simply tells the story of some amazing, and sometimes fighting, soldiers of the Royal Corps of Transport (RCT). All soldiers from every Corps and Regiment of the British Army have foible's and that includes these eleven, but these men would definitely be the sort of soldier you'd want standing at your shoulder 'when it all kicked off'. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Harry was a Crap Hat - (Second Edition) At the age of sixteen I joined the British Army with every intention of winning a Victoria Cross for saving my unit from certain death. I really fancied making a career out of being a 'National Hero.' What I didn't realise at the time was that to beco…me a hero of any kind requires, intelligence, charisma, physical strength, character, determination, courage, a focused mind, and - above all, humility. Well, one out of eight isn't bad I suppose, in fact, I'd have probably been in the top three when it came to humility. In regards to attaining all of the other attributes required to become a Nationwide Champion, my 'End of Term' reports would all have said things like, "Harry must try harder" or "Harry seems to struggle in these lessons." Joining the British Army's Royal Corps of Transport (RCT) seemed a fantastic opportunity to boost my personal profile and ego. In reality, my military career with the RCT and Royal Army Dental Corps (RADC) turned out to be somewhat less flamboyant. I served in the British Army for over 22 years, firstly as a Junior Leader, then a Regular Army soldier and finally a part-time Territorial Army Serviceman. I was given the nickname 'Harry' during my Basic Training as a Junior Leader in 1974. That name has now taken over from my christened name of Brian; even my siblings now refer to me as 'Harry.' At the end of my Basic Training I wanted to join 63 (Parachute) Squadron RCT, an elite Airborne unit that supported 5 AB (Airborne Brigade) on its Operational and Training Exercises. I was sent from Taunton, Somerset to attend the feared 'Beat Up, ' (a physical aptitude test), to see if I was both physically and mentally tough enough to become a British Army Paratrooper. If I eventually passed the horrors of 'P Company' I'd then qualify to wear the coveted Maroon Beret of the Airborne Forces. After four days, the Training Staff sent me back to Taunton because my sobbing each night was keeping the other candidates awake! Airborne Forces refer to every other soldier (regardless of Regiment or Corps) as a Crap Hat. They think that their own Maroon Beret is the sublime head-dress and that all of the others are merely 'Crap Hats' - hence the title of this book, 'Harry was a Crap Hat.' I'm certain that my reminiscences of army life will appeal to any former soldier and to any reader who appreciates a good laugh. Enjoy! Brian (Harry) Clacy This item is printed on demand.
