Beautifully printed on premium handmade paper with elegant typography by renowned San Francisco fine press master John Henry Nash w/ untrimmed text block edges at top & bottom margins. Both cloth spines show light toning & paper spine labels are present w/ minor edge chipping. Cover boards show rubbing & smudges, edges & corners are worn through in some spots. Pages are tight, clean, bright & crisp. Volume V features a complete Princeton library bookplate. Volume IV includes the same library bookplate on the front pastedown but has been partially torn away at the bottom half by a prior owner. In addition to the bookplates, both copies feature a small, blind-embossed stamp w/ the Princeton crest on the title page and duplicate "Withdrawn" stamps on the rear endpapers. No other library markings present. Volume V contains an engraved Princeton bookplate identifying the books as a gift from David H. McAlpin (1897-1989), Princeton Class of 1920, an investment banker, philanthropist & pioneering patron of photography at Princeton. From 1914 through about 1930, the collector William Andrews Clark Jr. published twenty volumes of catalogues of selected items from his library. This volume (cf. Besterman 5128) lists Clark's collection of Kelmscott Press books and related items, and then lists the Doves items, for a total of one hundred eleven unnumbered entries for books and various sets of pamphlets, designs and catalogues. The lengthy introduction by A.W. Pollard deals mostly with Morris and his influence. Morris' "Notes" on the founding of the Kelmscott Press precede the Kelmscott listings; Cobden-Sanderson's farewell to the Doves ("Salve Aeternum Aeternumque Vale") precedes the Doves listing.
