Soft cover. Condizione: Fine. Fine condition color illustrated softcover wraps. Includes Preface to the Bison Book Edition; Acknowledgments; Preface; Introduction by Robert A. Clark; Bibliography and Index. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs. "The Killing of Chief Crazy Horse is a story of envy, greed, and treachery. I…n the year after the Battle of the Little Big Horn, Crazy Horse and his half-starved followers finally surrendered to the U.S. Army near Camp Robinson, Nebraska. The reverberations of that event led to the death of the great Ogalala Sioux chief in the fall of 1877. Chiefs who had already surrendered resented the favors he received in doing so. When the army asked for his help rounding up the the Nez Perces, Crazy Horse's reply allegedly was mistranslated by Frank Grouard, a scout for General George Crook. By August rumors had spread that he was planning another outbreak. Arrested at Fort Robinson on 5 September, Crazy Horse was fatally wounded by a bayonet in a scuffle that was reported differently by every observer. In this book the killing of Crazy Horse is viewed from three widely differing perspectives - that of Chief He Dog, the victim's friend and lifelong companion; that of William Garnett, the guide and interpreter for Lieutenant William P. Clark, on special assignment to General Crook; and that of Valentine McGillycuddy, the medical officer who attended Crazy Horse in his last hours. Their eyewitness accounts, edited and introduced by Robert A. Clark, combine to give The Killing of Chief Crazy Horse all the starkness and horror of classical tragedy." - from the rear outer cover. "Invaluable for the opportunity it provides both teacher and student to reflect on how historical accounts are formulated from many different viewpoints." - Kliatt Young Audlt Paperback Book Guide. Browse this Book on GoogleEnduring Motives examines tradition and religious beliefs as they are expressed in landscape, the built environment, visual symbols, stories, and ritual. Bringing together archaeologists and Native American expe…rts, this volume focuses on long-lived religious traditions of the native peoples of the Americas and how religion codifies, justifies, and reinforces these traditions by placing a high value on continuity of beliefs and practice. Using clues from the archaeological record to piece together the oldest religions of the Americas, Enduring Motives is organized into four parts. Part 1 creates continuity through structure, iconography, and sacred stories that correspond to culture-specific symbolic representations of the universe. Part 2 explores the encoding of tradition in place and object, or how people use objects to enliven tradition and pass it on to future generations. Part 3 examines stability and change and shows how traditions can evolve over time without losing their core cultural significance. The final part recognizes deep-time traditions through the evidence of ancient cosmology and religious tradition. Spanning cultures as diverse as the Aztec, Plains Indians, Hopi, Mississippian, and Southwest Pueblo, Enduring Motives brings to light new insights on ancient religious beliefs, practices, methods, and techniques, which allow otherwise intangible facets of culture to be productively explored.
