Aggiungi al carrelloFirst edition (Paris, 1726). Printed in the heart of the early Enlightenment, this first edition of Jesuit philosopher Claude Buffierâs Traità de la socià tà civile sought to answer one of the ageâs most pressing questions: what does it mean to live well with others? Buffier, a major Jesuit intellectual, presents civil society n…ot as a cold system of laws, but as a moral framework in which happiness is found by making others happy. Issued in 1726 by Parisian publisher Marc Bordelet, whose presses supplied Jesuit colleges across France, this treatise circulated at a time when debates about sovereignty, natural law, and the rights of man were already beginning to reshape Europe. Buffierâs voice is that of the Catholic Enlightenment: measured, rational, ethical, and deeply human. The book also engages with other famous works of moral philosophy, adding observations and critiques that positioned Buffier as a counterpoint to both classical Stoicism and the radical individualism of his Protestant contemporaries. Traità de la socià tà civile is thus both a product of its Jesuit roots and a precursor to later, more secular Enlightenment discussions of political and civil society. Binding: Contemporary mottled calf, gilt spine compartments, raised bands; rubbed with loss at extremities, but solid and attractive. Interior: Text clean and complete, with crisp printing and ample margins. Light toning, a few small stains, but overall an excellent survival of a Jesuit Enlightenment classic. A book that embodies the Jesuit contribution to Enlightenment thought â" rational, ethical, pragmatic â" and an important reminder that the conversation about society and happiness was not confined to radicals, but flourished also in the cloisters and classrooms of Catholic Europe. First edition of Buffierâs Traità de la socià tà civile, Paris 1726, a Jesuit contribution to Enlightenment moral and political philosophy. Good (mottled calf rubbed, spine chipped at head, corners worn; hinges starting but firm; text block clean and complete with light age-toning) Contemporary full mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments with floral tooling; red edges. Extremities rubbed, corners worn, head of spine chipped, hinges starting but holding. 12mo format.
