Die Rede wurde anlässlich eines Diners der "Congressional Medal of Honor Society/Freedom Foundation" zu Ehren des Vorsitzenden des Generalstabs gehalten, worin General Clay ein Bild der militärischen Aktionen der U.S. Army ab dem zweiten Weltkrieg zeichnet. Als wesentliche Ziele sieht er die Revitalisierung der NATO an, die Stabilisierung der europäischen Staaten, die Eindämmung des Kommunismus in Europa und Asien und aus aktuellem Anlass besonders die fortgesetzte Unterstützung der Südvietnamesen im Vietnamkrieg: "It must be a frustrating war for our military leaders who wait to be attacked while knowing they have the power and strength to do more, but sooner or later the North Vietnam Government must realize our determination and accept the necessity for negotiation [.]". - Mit gepr. Condizione: In red cloth chemise. One page, on personal letterhead. 4to. "I wish that I could single out a single military hero. For dash and brilliance in battle, I would select 'Jeb' Stuart and George Patton; for brilliant strategy, it would be Napoleon and Hannibal. However, for sheer character and selflessness in leadership, it would be George Washington, George Marshall, and Ike Eisenhower is as far as our country is concerned. Perhaps, the greatest Roman of them all was Scipio Africanus." Clay (1898-19780 himself was deputy to General Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1945; deputy military governor, Germany (U.S.) 1946; and commander in chief, U.S. Forces in Europe and military governor of the U.S. Zone, in Germany, 1947-49. Clay is considered the "father" of the Berlin Airlift (1948-1949). "Clay was an outstanding engineer, administrator, businessman, diplomat, and army leader who, according to former secretary of state Byrnes, 'could run either General Motors or General Eisenhower's armies.' According to the Washington Post, 'Lucius D. Clay played a pivotal role in three epochal events of the twentieth century: the rescue of America from Depression, the mobilization for World War II, and--his crowning achievement--the rehabilitation of West Germany.' His sixty years of dedicated and selfless public service left an indelible mark on post-World War II America as well as on America's European allies." (ANB). One page, on personal letterhead. 4to.
