HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - MISSIONARY TRAVEL AT THE EDGE OF THE CANADIAN NORTH William Carpenter Bompas (1834-1906) spent much of his clerical career in northwestern Canada, becoming successively Anglican bishop of Athabasca, Mackenzie River and Selkirk as the enormous northern ecclesiastical territories were reorganized. Cody's account is particularly interesting for the way missionary biography intersects with the literature of northern travel. Dog teams, frozen rivers, remote trading posts, canoe journeys, the Yukon and the Klondike provide the geographical framework for a book intended to present Bompas's endurance and religious vocation as heroic adventure. A PERIOD VIEW OF INDIGENOUS LIFE AND NORTHERN EXPANSION. The book also preserves an explicitly early twentieth-century missionary perspective on Indigenous peoples and Inuit communities. Its language and attitudes belong to the colonial and missionary culture in which it was written and should be understood in that historical context.
