This issue has a large amount of material devoted to Ina Coolbrith [1841-1928], a niece of Joseph Smith, who went on to become a well-known California poet and friend of such literati as Bret Harte, Joaquin Miller, Mark Twain and Ambrose Bierce. She supported herself by working at the Oakland Public Library where she befriended Jack London and Isadora Duncan, and later for the Bohemian Club, which made her an honorary member. In 1915 she organized a World Congress of Authors for the Panama-Pacific Exposition and in recognition was named the first Poet Laureate of California. Among the collections of poetry she published is SONGS OF THE GOLDEN GATE (1895), from which selections are reprinted in this issue of THE NOTRE DAME QUARTERLY. This issues also includes a good deal of biographical information about Coolbrith, as well as tributes.
