    Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Limited Edition; 1st Printing. B&W Illustrations; Limited to 500 copies, this is number 196. Bound in Redwood with cloth hinges and handpainted titles. This book is in Very Good condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The book and its contents are in clean, bright condition. The cloth hinges have darkening and wear. The text pages are clean but noticeably toned due to the acid content of the paper. The lettering on the front cover of the book has partly faded. "the ribbon hinges have wear and tear. "Roy Clarkson Colman was born in Elgin, IL on Jan. 27, 1884. Artistically inclined at an early age, Colman moved to Chicago when he was 16 and began his art studies with L. H. Yarwood. The years 1903-11 were spent in Dallas, TX where he painted scenes along the Gulf of Mexico and a series of the old Indian forts. In 1911 he left for a two-year stay in Paris to further study at Académies Julian and Grand Chaumière. Returning to the U. S. , he settled in southern California in 1913 where he was active in Pasadena, La Jolla, and served as director of the Santa Ana Art Academy. A founder of the Laguna Beach Art Ass'n in 1918, he bought beachfront property there on which he built a home and studio. By 1928 he was living on the Monterey Peninsula and active in the local art scene. Colman died in San Diego on Nov. 29, 1945. Although he painted landscapes, he is best known for his coastals and marines." (from Wikipedia) ; Signed by Author.

    First edition. xxii, 89 pp. 36 b/w illustrations. Sm. 8vo. (5 3/8 x 7 1/2 in.). Signed and numbered by Colman on the limitation page. This is number 237 of 500 copies. "The cover of this first edition is made of California Redwood, handprinted on my antique press and bound in my studio at Bird Rock-by-the-sea, La Jolla, California." Roy Clarkson Colman (1884-1945) was a La Jolla artist and poet whose work had been covered in the "International Studio." Contains poems and prints. Scarce California title. OCLC shows only nine copies of which all but 3 are in California. One rope tie a bit shortened, rear board mildly rubbed else a fine bright copy. Redwood with cloth strips, handpainted titles, paper label, rope ties.

    Hardcover. 500 copies, signed and numbered by the author. 7.5 x 5.5 inches, hand painted illustrated wooden (California Redwood) boards, more of a case with front hinge decoratively taped, twine markers also bound in. Lengthy period gift inscription, some surface scratches to boards, an interesting example of West Coast bohemian-style self-publishing of the thirties.

Each copy of this book was printed for a specific individual; this copy was made for Mrs. C. W. Gates, as indicated on the reverse side of the dedication page. The cover of this 12mo. volume is made of California Redwood; the covers are attached to the wooden spine by three strips of brown fabric. The pages were printed on the author's press; the lettering on the front cover was handpainted by the author. Signed by Colman on the limitation page. Condition: the three cloth strips show some minor wear and discoloration, but are still holding; slight age-darkening to wooden boards; else near fine. Pages: xxiii, 89. Signed by Author(s).
