The Nurse Training Act of 1964 (NTA) was a landmark U.S. federal law enacted to combat a severe nursing shortage by providing funding for nursing education, student loans, and school construction. It au…thorized over $283 million over five years, significantly expanding the nursing workforce and increasing diversity by promoting the integration of nursing schools. It provided grants for the construction and renovation of nursing school facilities. It established low-interest student loans to make nursing education more accessible. It funded improvements to nursing school programs to increase enrollment. It played a crucial role in dismantling racial segregation in professional nursing schools, supporting Black nurses' access to education. It dramatically increased the number of nurses per capita in the United States, especially between 1972 and 1983. The 1964 NTA represented a major shift in the federal government's role, setting the stage for ongoing federal investment in nursing education. Following 1964, several amendments continued federal support for nursing education throughout the 1970s.

This was the first hearing on H.R. 6977, the Chronic Hazards Labeling Act introduced by Congressman Fred Richmond. The committee focused on the potential hazards to consumers arising from…the use of various chemicals in arts and crafts materials. Of particular concern was the use of many of these products by children, who are more susceptible to chemical damage to their systems. The purpose of the bill was to alert consumers to the potential product health effects, as well as to advise them on precautionary measures.

Includes statements from Joseph Califano, Donald Cornely, Andrew Guthrie, Edwin Kendig, Wendy Lazarus, Mary MacCracken, Julius Richmond, Hillary Rodham. Leonard Schaeffer, and Judy Weitz. Child health oversig…ht is primarily led by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), which advises federal health departments on pediatric research and functions. The oversight of pediatric health in the United States spans several vital fronts, ranging from federal public health mandates to local clinical care delivery:Federal Strategy: Federal efforts to combat the childhood chronic disease epidemic are coordinated through interagency task forces like the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) Commission, which is tasked with realigning public health systems and advancing pediatric research Department of Health and Human Services (HHS MAHA Strategy). Preventative Care: Oversight at the practitioner level relies heavily on routine preventative milestones. You can use the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) resources for schedules on well-child visits, immunizations, and developmental screenings. Research & Data: Long-term physical and emotional health oversight for youths ages 0-17 is tracked using the National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH), which assesses access to care and the prevalence of special healthcare needs. State & Child Welfare Oversight: For at-risk populations, state councils and citizen review boards-such as those monitored by the Maryland Department of Human Services (DHS)-provide necessary institutional and legal oversight to ensure child well-being and safety.

The Safe Drinking Water Act Authorization of 1979 (Public Law 96-63) was an act of Congress that extended appropriations for the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) for three fiscal years. It provided federal funding lines for EPA research, technical assistance, state program grants, and underground water protection. Enacted on September 6, 1979, Public Law 96-63 updated the legislative provisions of the original SDWA (passed in 1974) to keep federal water security and state grant programs funded. The 1979 legislation amended the Public Health Service Act to authorize the following specific annual budget allocations:State Grants for Public Water System Supervision: Authorized ($29,450,000) (FY 1980), ($32,000,000) (FY 1981), and ($34,000,000) (FY 1982). State Underground Water Source Protection: Authorized ($7,795,000) (FY 1980), ($18,000,000) (FY 1981), and ($21,000,000) (FY 1982). By extending the authorization, Congress allowed the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to continuously enforce national health-based standards to protect tap water. It also maintained a critical framework to prevent both naturally-occurring and man-made contaminants from polluting public drinking water supplies. The Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) is the primary federal law that ensures the quality of public drinking water in the U.S. Originally passed in 1974, the law was significantly amended in 1996 to direct the EPA to set science-based, legally enforceable standards for over 90 contaminants in public water systems. The EPA is authorized to establish National Primary Drinking Water Regulations (NPDWRs) to protect against both naturally occurring and man-made contaminants. While the EPA sets the baseline, the SDWA allows states to assume primary enforcement responsibility (primacy) as long as their state standards are at least as stringent as the federal requirements. The Act authorizes EPA-administered or state-run programs to regulate the injection of fluids underground to prevent contamination of underground sources of drinking water. The Act authorizes funding mechanisms-such as the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (DWSRF)-to assist public water systems in financing the costs of infrastructure improvements needed to comply with SDWA regulations. The original Act is Public Law 93-523 (enacted December 16, 1974).
