Prima edizione
Soft cover. Condizione: As New. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 16 pages. Published in 1993. Landmark Exhibition Catalog. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a softcover original only. There is no ISBN. The Exhibition Catalog is now scarce. An austerely elegant production by John Fender: Regular-sized volume format. Pictorial softcovers with a beautiful wraparound image, as issued. Photographs by Nathan Lerner. Essays by Stephen Prokopoff and Jo-Ann Conklin. List of Exhibition Plates appended at the end. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name held at the University of Iowa Museum of Art from October 30, 1993 through January 2, 1994. Presents "Nathan Lerner: Maxwell Street". One of the best introductions to the Maxwell Street photographs of Nathan Lerner. Best-known as a member of the Bauhaus School in Chicago, where he was a student and subsequently an esteemed colleague of Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Lerner photographed between 1935 and 1940 the legendary Maxwell Street in Chicago, "the world's largest flea market", a document of the Great Depression as well as Chicago's resilient spirit as a city. "Offers a remarkably rich vision of how people struggled and made do in an era of adversity, a vision that ranges from anguish and despair through laughter, low comedy, and high spirits. Lerner's Maxwell Street is thoroughly human. It is also assured, dazzling for an artist, then in his early twenties, in its understanding of the evocative capabilities of the camera" (Stephen Prokopoff). The images recall Dorothea Lange and Walker Evans, but as Jo-Ann Conklin points out in her shrewd essay, Lerner had not heard of nor seen their work at the time he created his own unforgettable photographs. An absolute "must-have" title for Nathan Lerner collectors. This title is now collectible. This is one of few copies of the Exhibition Catalog still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. A scarce copy thus. 10 plates. One of the finest American photographers of the 20th century. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER NATHAN LERNER TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). no.
