Dark yellow cloth, titles and illustrations printed in red on the cover and spine, decorated endpapers: author signed in pencil on a blank preliminary, small stain to upper corner of back board, edges lightly rubbed, very faint toning to leaves. In the illustrated dust jacket printed red on beige: spine darkened, edges chipped with cello tape repairs, short closed tears, stain to upper corner of back panel. Set in the Klamath country, this story "portrays the characteristics of the Indians under extraordinary circumstances." Cooper was a Civil War veteran from Missouri who arrived in Oregon in 1866 where he pursued multiple occupations commercial and political, eventually settling in McMinnville. Dust jacket preserved in a clear, removable archival sleeve.
